hi

Maybe its just me but when I do deadlifts with relatively heavy weight (for me) my fingers cant hold the bar. It feels like i have the strength to do more reps but my fingers just give way and I drop the bar. Are my fingers extremely weak, I use a over and under type grip.

thanks

try lifting straps

I use straps. Some people are opposed to straps because they hinder grip strength and forearm development. My first set of deads I do without straps, but when I get over 300lbs I have to have straps. I get my grip strength and forearm training on forearm day. I do not see why the benifits of heavy deads should be hindered because my hands can't hold the bar.

hi

Thanks for the response

so how does the strap work ?
does it lock under the bar or something ?

thanks

Like you my strength gives out when DLing heavy. I have lifting straps but, I use lifting straps with a one inch hook (RD Millenium Hooker II Lifting Strap) that fits in the palm of your hand with a padded wrist strap, works great. There are some straps out there with similar hooks which are a little too wide and because they're too wide they don't let you "feel" the bar. The RD's cost about 10 bucks and worth every penny.

Peace

Never use straps for standard (not stiff legged) Deadlifts !!

Just do as much as you can, your grip and technique will improve

Hold on tighter.

i deadlift about three times a month and i warm up with no straps....but once the weight hits 275 and more i need the straps..theres just no other way for me...i even do forearm exercises and use straps as least as possible on back day but sometimes ur grip just cant match ur other muscle power

train your grip then.

here is what Dr. ken Leinster had this to say about training with straps in his publication THE STEEL TIP, volume 1, number 2, feb, 1985.:

"When I reached the point where I was using 350lbs for 15 reps in the stifflegged deadlift while standing on an elevated surface, I used straps, rationalizing their use by telling myself that I wanted to give me low back and hamstrings a good workout without being limited by a lack of hand strength. When I made the decision to forego the use of straps and persevere until I could handle heavy weights without them, I surpassed previous bests. In fact, the entire exercise became much more intense and my overall gains in strength and muscular size were quite unexpected. Perhaps my level of concentration was higher because I was so intent on maintaining my grip on the barbell. As neuroanatomists know, the area of the brain that exerts control over the hand muscles has a much higher representation relative to actual muscle size than other muscle groups. Although it is strictly conjecture, perhaps intense forearm/hand work heightens neural stimulation for all muscles, worked during a particular movement. My experience has showen that taking the time and energy to directly stimulate the forearm musculature leads to increased ability to handle heavy weights in many exercises."

Fuck straps

IMO - If you can't lift w/o straps, then you cant lift it. Your grip is part of training, if your lifts surpass your grip strength, then train your grip!

Haha, I thought I'd just sum it up for ya.

It's almost like using a benching shirt in my opinion. If you can't bench it without the shirt, you can't bench it. Period. That's the only reason the record bench is higher than the record deadlift. Deadlifts should never be weaker than benches and they are because people get 300+ pounds out of a piece of equipment... ridiculous if you ask me.

hi

Yeah the main reason I was concerned is because ive been doing gopros p/rr/s workout and in power week the deadlifts are only supposed to be around 4-6 reps, I use about 130kg for this which I cant hold onto for more than 4 reps before my hands give way.

cheers

i always use straps for pullups and last dl sets, and never train forearms.

How are you holding the bar? One palm in; the other out? Once I learned to switch it up to the aforementioned style my grip has never let me down, you'll get through it.
