Sugars?

Why are sugars typically limited in a diet?

Is it just because of their GI?
Or something else?

diets high in simple sugars cause hyperinsulinemia or cronic elevated serum insulin levels. this can effect glucose tolerance/insulin sensivity. decreased insulin sensivity is a pre-cursor to type II diabetes

body composition is pretty much a direct indicator of insulin sensivity. if you are lean insulin sensivity is generally high if you are overweight/high body fat insulin sensivity is low.

So is it ok to consume alot of low GI sugars such as the sugars from milk(lactose)? The GI is around 30-40

depends on what your goals are. milk is low GI but high on the insulin index. if you are lean and light for your height then milk can be of great help to gaining LBM with some fat gain. if your bf is already moderate to high then regular consumption of milk would not be the best thing to do

it all depends. you can drink a couple of glasses a day if you are having trouble gaining weight to help bring you your cals and daily protein totals. but I wouldn't drink a gallon, etc. daily like some people do to gain weight.

Oh, so GI and insulin response are not directly related then?

that gets kind of a yes & no answer. you can look at a food item and tell that if it's high in simple sugars and low in fiber than generally it will be high GI and also be high on the insulin index. the insulin index is rather new (couple of years) and there isn't a lot of data on it right now.
