Bulking Question

I was just wondering how long you usually bulk. Do you usually base it on once you reach a certain weight or a certain body fat percentage. I'm 6'1 170 pounds and was wondering what weight I should bulk to before I start to cut. I am thinking about bulking up to 185 and then cutting to about 175 or should I bulk more and/or cut more/less?

You bulk until you feel like cutting.

Bulk until you are either happy with your muscle size or unhappy with your BF%... There is no 'set' criteria.

But I think you are thinking about it the wrong way - if your total weight is not too bad for your height then you should really base it on BF% rather than total body weight...

Generally, if you are a male, I would not continue to bulk once you hit a BF% of 18%... Any more than this and your partitioning will be less than ideal. Some males don't like their BF% to get above about 15% on a bulk (so they cut to <10 and then bulk till they hit ~15%).

For females - anything above about 22% would mean a less than favourable result. Some females don't like figures above about 20% - so they usually cut to 12-14% and bulk till they hit 18-20%.

If you are 170 and 6'1 then your weight is not too skinny, but you definately want to focus on adding some lean mass soon. However, if your bf% is more towards the higher end of things (say, above 15-18%) then consider a recomp before you go into an all out bulk... If your BF% is <~12% then eat up!

This may be a stupid question, but what exactly is a recomp. Also, I don't know how accurate it is but I have a Tanita Ultimate Body Fat that I got for 50 bucks. Not sure how accurate these are but I usually take my weight and bf % first thing in the morning when I wake up and it always gives me a bf between 10-12. It hasn't gone over 12 yet.

A recomp is when you slowly gain muscle and lose fat. You eat maintenance and work your ass off in the gym. The goal is to maintain your weight, but improve your overall physique.

Yup.

How accurate are those body fat scales. Like I said I bought a Tanita for 50 bucks and it always says between 10-12%. I take it every morning right when I wake up before eating anything. Can I trust it?

Pfffttt... Although they are better than a poke in the eye with a burnt stick the accuracy of those scales can be bad at the best of times (depending on hydration level, your glycogen levels, how you carry your BF - upper or lower, what you have in your intestines at any given time etc etc). For some people it is not all that much better than www.mybodycomp.com

If you can get your hands on it calipers give you a more accurate reading, as to the BIA composition analysers that read off feet and hands (not just scales). Something like www.getdunked.com would be your most accurate choice.

I started bulking about 3 months ago. I was 155. I am not 178. I wanted to be 185 but now I think I want to be 200. I will probably take me another year to hit 200. I have been slacking the past couple weeks. Working to much.

I would bulk until either you feel too fat or you are around 16% bf
