For you studs and lady's out there who have been training for 2 straight years or longer, What keeps you motivated to keep it going. I've been at this for a while and train 5 days a week. That is what works for me. Probably 4 of those days I find it hard to just get started and when I do start find it hard to keep my mind from wondering and keep it focused on my workout. Maybe it's my age

TOUGH

seeing improvements in body or in the weight I'm moving keeps me going...also reading fitness articles in mags or websites always makes me excited to work out the next day...

I do it to help me self esteem....I hate myself and feel ashamed all the time, esp when I'm naked.

Posted by: TheRoyalOne

Personally, I'm just never satisfied.

Posted by: animalmachine

i always hit the gym immediately after work... just part of the daily routine - getting to the gym isn't the problem, lifting w. intensity is sometimes. what keeps me motivated is thinking about the core reasons why i started lifting in the first place. everyone's reasons are different, sometimes we just forget.

Basically everything listed above applies to me. I love moving up in weight and strive to do so in at least one exercise per workout. Then afterwards I record comments and what weights I should do next time to get a better workout and improve myself even more. Lifting heavy is great and I just love doing it. I suppose you could say that the lifting itself motivates me. Oh yeah, getting enormous strength gains and a better physique doesn't really discourage me, either.

Posted by: Tough Old Man

Well there's my biggest problem. I have been cutting for 6 months. Have dropped 17% bodyfat and 50 lbs in weight. Now I'm carb cycling and not getting any stronger at this time. Guess when my B/f gets down to 10% and I start to bulk, my strength will increase and back will come the motivation. Still have 6% B/f to drop.

At least you're accomplishing a goal. Just keep on going until it's done, and then go ahead and set strength goals. It'll be worth it.

The compliments I get motivate me mostly.

I wo 5 days a week also. For me I only occasionally feel I need to force the wo (usually on leg day). I have been using the P/RR/S routine (well actually I have been doing RR/P/RR/S) and the constant changing up of exercises, reps and rest intervals keeps the routine fresh. Also, every 4 weeks (one complete cycle) I will mix up the exercises a little to keep me from getting stale or bored. I also wo after dinner, sort of capping of my day with a wo. No matter how lousy a day I had, I end it with a wo and that is doing something good for my mental and physical well being. So it becomes somthing I look forward to doing.

I am not pushing P/RR/S on you, however, you may want to set up a routine that changes up the rotation of your exercises or the intensity levels every few weeks to keep things changing and fresh. I have been doing P/RR/S for about a year now and I still have to refer to my wo log to know what exercise and wts to use. So it is almost like I am constantly on a new program. Well, at least that is what works for me at the moment (and the forseeable future).

I am still a noob really but I have been working out since i was like 14 r so n i can tell a big diference....i used to be a twig some of my weight gains ar due to growth spurts..puberty and all the hormones n stuff but i dnt think that accounts for all of the weight I've gained.....I do it because it comes in handy....like if someone talks trash to me I can threaten them and they dont do much because mosta the guys who try to mess with me r outa shape n i could arse rape them.

progress, personal challenge and body comp improvements....

Mostly progress in the weights and body. Also, I just feel plain lazy if I don't train.

Those times when I reach a state of white hot concentration. It is almost like a form of meditation. Being in such a state is awesome. Another word comes to mind: strength. If you don't know what I mean, then you can't understand.

Posted by: Tough Old Man

I know what strength is and also know what it's like to lose it while cutting for six months. A lot of it is this new diet of carb cycling. Three days of the week have no carbs. Two days have 175 carbs and two days have 450 carbs. It's those low and no carbs that deplete my strength. It's ok as I may only have 1-3 more months of cutting. Come on body get down to 10% B/F. This has been a long haul.

Sounds to me like you DO have quite a bit of determination to track your diet and maintain that progress over 6+ months.

Posted by: Tough Old Man

Well I'd have to say my B/F has been in the low 30's for most of my life. So yes i have the determination to get this shit down to 10%. This is the first time I have ever been able to see veins through out most of my body and it's around 15-16% right now. I'll have it professionally check again next week. It will have been 6 weeks since the last check and then i was about 17.9%. I'm down about 7-8 lbs in weight and on T-3 and Igf right now. So I'm sure it's lower as my waist is smaller then it was 6 weeks ago.

I stay motivated by changing my program around and changing my focus and goals from training phase to training phase......some may be speed, power/strength, aerobic improvement, dnesity training, olympic lifting, powerlifting, BB'er type training. So many different ways to program to keep me focused.

15 years ago I had to pull a buddie from a burning Helecopter. It was all I could do to barely lift the guy and I (actually) ended up dragging him out of harms way.

I swore then and there I'd never be too weak to carry a buddie off the battlefield again.

That's why I lift.

TOUGH
i've been working out for about 4 years, and the thing that keeps me motivated is my health (prevents injury, lowers chance of heart attack, etc), looks (when you look good you feel good), and it just interests me (I like a good challenge). I also feel so damn good after a hard workout. shit, working out has kept me from being bored on numerous occasions. I just love doing this and dont plan on stopping anytime soon.

Yes Patrick I'll bet you one real weak SUCKER. Should I come over a spot you with that 500 lb bench of yours?

LOL, I have a 0 lb bench press so spotting we wont be a problem.

Posted by: mrguy

I've been training for 4 years now.

Like you, as I get older I find it hard sometimes to stay focused.

I have pictures of what I looked like when I started and now tacked up on my wall. When ever I need a little motivation, I look at those pics.

I was 240lbs, 40" waist, and about 30% bf when I started out. Now, I'm 200'bs, 34" waist and about 10% bf. Looking at the pics makes me think how I never want to go back to looking like that.

My favorite workout is legs, every week I try to personally best my seated leg press weight. I'm up to 8 reps with 850lbs, then I jump up and do squats in the smith machine.

I refuse to get old!

Posted by: WATTS

knowing that im not close to where i want to be at. and i purely love working out(the results and feeling of acomplishing something).

Posted by: BritChick

Ultimately I enjoy it.
I've been lifting on and off for 20 years... eek!
I've definately hit lulls in motivation but I'm very goal oriented so I just have to keep finding ways to re-motivate myself and set new goals.
I also keep at it because in the past when I've stopped for periods of time I've started to look like shit... that's always a big motivator to get back at it!
