What are some supplements a person should avoid if they are infected with Hep C.

I'm not sure which forum to post this in, the Health or supplement forum?

Posted by: bandaidwoman

Here is a list to avoid if you have chronic active hepatitis C, add to that list Kava Kava since it has been associated with fulminant liver failure (not sure if still available over the counter because of this) http://www.hepccouncilsa.asn.au/herbs.html

Very interesting.... Pam Anderson and Elder Judd was diagnosed with Hep C.
I saw that Ma Huang was on that Toxic herb list. Would this also be common as well to the Hep A & B?

Posted by: min0 lee

Thanks BandAidwoman for the info, but maybe I misread something here. The first site says that green tea is good for you but the second one claims that "Green tea leaf" is toxic. Are they not the same?

Don't worry, there is enough data that shows it is not liver toxic, in fact, it seems protective against alcoholic liver disease. (I did an extensive search on medline and medscape. ) I don't know where he got that except it may be a typo. I looked at his other ingrediants on the list and ran that up against med- line so he is spot on with everything else. That was a good pickup by you!

It only affects you if you have chronic active viral hepatitis (in other words, active inflammatory damage to your liver caused by the virus.) 50% of people who have been exposed to hepatitis C develop chronic ongoing active hepatitis in contrast to 5% of hepatitis B exposed people. People exposed to Hep A may die immediatly but when recovered, they will not ever develop chronic active hepatitis. Thus, if you are the 5% of Hep B exposed people who developed chronic active hepatitis and the 50% that developed chronic hepatitis C, you should avoid those supplements. Those who have had Hep A and recovered have nothing to worry about.

So I just want to make sure I don't harm my liver taking supplements.

I did a search here for Hep. C and really didn't find anything so I figured by posting this it would help those who have it but are ashamed to say they have it.

Whatever happened to BandAidwoman?
She was so nice.

Posted by: min0 lee

Well I finally went to see a doctor about this and they did both a biopsy and sonogram on my liver.
They used a needle for the liver biopsy to take out a small sample, it looked like a tiny worm. It stung a bit but not too bad.

Posted by: bandaidwoman

Still here mino. I assume they determined you have chronic active hep c and are staging its damage to your kidneys and or deciding if you will respond to interferon, ribivarin? Do you happen to know the genotype of the hep C?

Posted by: min0 lee

The doctor will let me know if I need medication and he's done with the results.
He was telling the reaction to these medications can be pretty bad, he's telling me if my condition is not serious I can do without it.

I'll ask what type of Genotype of hep C I have.

The nurse doing the Sonogram told me the size of my liver was normal.

Good to see your still here.

knowing the genotype lets us know if it is likely to respond to interferon

Quote:
[HCV genotype
The most important baseline predictor for response to antiviral combination therapy with interferon-alpha and ribavirin is HCV genotype. HCV genotype 1 has been shown to be associated with lower rates of sustained virologic response compared with genotypes other than 1 by logistic regression analysis.68, 28, 3032 An HCV genotype other than 1 independently and significantly increases the odds of achieving sustained virologic response with odds ratios of 3.25 and 5.4 in different trials on combination therapy of peginterferon-alpha-2a plus ribavirin.6, 7 Rates of sustained virologic response after treatment with peginterferon-alpha plus ribavirin for 48 weeks range from 41 to 52% in patients with HCV genotype 1 infection (Table 1).68 However, when treated with the same combination therapy regimen for 24 to 48 weeks, patients infected with HCV genotype 2 or 3 achieve sustained virologic response rates of 76-84% (Table 1). 68, 33 Furthermore, it has been shown that a shorter treatment duration of 24 weeks compared with 48 weeks does not impair sustained virologic response rates in patients with HCV genotype 2 or 3 infection.7, 30, 31, 33 In this patient group treatment with peginterferon-alpha-2a or 2b plus ribavirin for 24 weeks results in sustained virologic response rates of 81-84% as compared with sustained virologic response rates of 76-82% for treatment with peginterferon-alpha-2a or 2b plus ribavirin for 48 weeks.68, 33 In patients with HCV genotype 2 or 3 infection, flat doses of 800 mg ribavirin daily in combination with peginterferon-alpha-2a are proven to be sufficient (Table 1).7 For the use of pegylated interferon-alpha-2b, however only data with weight-based dosing are currently available.33

These data lead to different treatment recommendations for patients infected with HCV genotype 1 and patients infected with HCV genotypes 2 or 3 (see below). The reasons for the different virologic response rates in different HCV genotypes are complex and not yet fully understood. Viral kinetic analyses suggest that during interferon-alpha-based therapy, clearance of infected hepatocytes is slower and antiviral efficacy is reduced in patients infected with HCV genotype 1 compared with infections with other HCV genotypes.38, 39

I also meant to say liver instead of kidneys in the above first post i made, tired post call.....

I'll ask the doctor for sure, he might even be suprised I would ask such a question. I knew about Hep A,B,C but never knew about the HCV genotypes.

I wonder if he can tell how long I've had this for, this way I can pinpoint how I got this. Hopefully he can find out.

Are you a Doctor?

Are you a Doctor?
Yes, associate prof of clinical medicine in internal medicine.

I come to these and other forums to learn what my athletes are into. It really helps my treatment knowing what supplements you guys are doing. Most of the time ,people are afraid to tell their doctor what is going on. I have to bring it up in the history. As for how long you have had this, sometimes the liver pathology can show that , but sometimes not.

Apparently, the percentages aren't exactly what I thought they were in regards to healthcare workers, et al. unless there is a needle stick or similar event involved. On other words, infection is more closely related to the same set of rules put into play for HIV infection, etc. -there has to be direct contact with blood/bodily fluids.....

Hepatitis C: FAQ | CDC Viral Hepatitis

Of course, I was working in the E.R. and Psych floor when HIV/Aids first hit the media in the mid eighties.....we were all pretty much freaked out and paranoid for a while.

Mino, listen to Bandaidwoman.... she is a doctor for sure, and a damn good one at that!

Definitely, when she posts I listen.

Holy shit, I'm sorry to hear this mino. So, both of you must have it now? That is shitty.

I'm not exactly sure as to the legitamacy of all of these sites, and I'm sure you've already searched for yourself, but I thought I'd just throw them out there. I just figured that sometimes when we're right in the middle of a situation we don't feel like researching.

Looks like milk thistle is the most popular herbal approach. But I haven't read everything, I flunked out of Med school, and I didn't get the Doctor's role on that commercial, so my credibility is really weak.

You saying I sound like the grim reaper for offering my condolences?

Down Simba, down.

Note the smilies/emoticons to the right of the statement.

Posted by: KelJu

No, I sometimes say stuff not really understanding that it sounds different to other people than it does to me, so I was thinking that maybe I came off sounding like Min0 had aids and terminal anal warts.

We're all 'guilty' of this.....no big deal.

Besides, we already knew Min0 had all of that other stuff, didn't we?

Posted by: min0 lee

Well the doctor say's I have genotype 3 and he is putting me on ribavirin for 6 months.

This will probably hurt my training.

I may have had this for over 20 years. He's not sure.

Posted by: DaMayor

Exactly. This was the case with my brother-in-law. There is really no way of telling how or where you might contract this, or any other "disease" for that matter. While the ground rules have been laid out for the most part, we are talking about a microorganism......who knows.

Have you been told how advanced this thing is?

He told me it isn't so bad, hopefully with the medication he say's I can get rid if it.

Funny, while I was there I wasn't in the right state of mind. Having this crap blows my mind.

Can you get rid of it? Or just repress it/minimize liver damage?

Either way, my (not formally uneducated and completely speculative...read disclaimer ) guess is that you'll continue to live a normal life....just live right and keep on truckin'. My Bro-in-law has shown no symptoms, and has maintained the same quality of life for twenty years...(and he drinks and smokes as well. Not that this is recommended)

Posted by: min0 lee

I guess repress it, when I heard Pamela say she no longer has it I called shenanigans.
I still lead the same life I did before I found out I had it.
I just don't drink anymore.

Posted by: DaMayor

Yeah, the no drinking policy would probably be helpful.

My Bro-in-law was drinking like a fish...not an abuser, mind you, but more than the average person. I suspect this will catch up with him later.

It will.

Posted by: min0 lee

It represses it, took it last night and I feel like the Hulk body slammed me.

I may stop taking this medication.

Posted by: TrojanMan60563

Yeah that feeling would be hard to cope with for 6 months...unless it would really get rid of it.

I couldn't get out of bed from all the aches and pain, I never felt like this before.

Side effects are: unusual tiredness or weakness, headache, nausea, difficulty falling asleep, decreased appetite, muscle, joint and bone pain.

Well it's all true, I felt each and everyone of those.

I'll talk to my Doc on Monday mourning and let him know I can't do this.
