Before bed I usually have 2 scoops of whey, 2 tbsp of natty pb. would it be better to have something like eggs before bed or is the whey alright? I'm looking for calories, bulking up atm.

I would choose something slower digesting that whey. Keep the natty pb and have some cottage cheese. A lot of people mix them together for their pre bed meal. Eggs would be good a long with any other lean meat.

If you want roughly the same protein content as your whey + PB then the cc + PB would be good (you would get a little more carb but that would be fine).

3 whites + 1 whole + 6 oz beef = crap load of protein. Your eggs = 17.5g protein + 5g fat and the beef (assuming it is a LEAN steak or something similar) would = ~46g protein and ~10g fat. So that would total ~63.5g protein and 15g fat...

You might find the steak sits too heavily in your stomach pre-bed - but you could eat it if you want. Otherwise something like 1 whole egg, 5 whites (24.5g protein, 5g fat) and 1 tbs PB would be something roughly the equivalant to what you were having before.

When I am bulking, I have a decent amount of cottage cheese before bed. At least 25g of protein worth. I take some generic metamucil with it to slow down digestion even more, as well as to scrub out my digestive tract for morning disposal.

try a slower digesting protein such as a powder with casein blend or some cottage cheese. It will last longer through out the night.

I usually go for egg whites and veggies

does PB slow the digestion process of the whey protein ?

Yes, fats, in general, slow the digestion process. Fiber does too. PB is a good source of good fats, especially Natural PB.

Simple answer... yes... But the extent depends on the timing of ingestion (are you eating them directly together? Are you eating the PB just before the whey or the whey just before the PB?), how it is mixed (that is - is they whey a liquid and the PB a solid afterwards, or are they blended into a paste?) etc...

The effect that PB has on gastric emptying is due to two main reasons:

one - due to the effect it has on gastric emptying once it reaches the small intestine... Which means the fat needs to move into the small intestine before the whey to get this to happen... So if you eat the whey in a liquid form and then eat your PB the effects will be less (as the liquid whey will move through more quickly)... But if you eat the PB first, and then a bit later you drink the whey - the effect will be more...

Similarly, the more solid PB has a slower transit time in the stomach and small intestine.. So if you blend the whey into the PB the digestion will be slower (te whey will be 'trapped' by the more solid PB oth in the stomach and in the small intestine)... However, if you blend the two into a liquid form the digestion is slightly faster...

The fibre in the PB (although small) will also have a slight effect on digestion...

But - in the real world (and in terms of the difference it will make to the average person) those are all small and 'anal' differences to get caught up in...
