Caloric contents never add up

Sorry this really isn't post-worthy, but I always notice if I do the math at carbs/protein=4cal/gram, fat=9, it seems like the posted caloric content on food labels is a few percent higher. Are there other caloric elements involved? Or are the 4/9 approximations? It's usually only a minor difference, but I've always meant to ask someone.

I've noticed that too - and depending on the product, i have noticed that sometimes they do count sugar alcohols (if any), and they count the fiber as part of the carbs, and if you don't count either as carbs, then yours is going to add up to less calories than theirs.

ALSO, sometimes they round to the nearest tenth (fitday.com seems to do this with some of the totals as well).

In science, most everything has an associated error with it. The more tools that are used to come up with a number, the higher the propagated error. Hence, the 4 cal and 9 cal per gram are only approximations with some error. Not to mention that it is highly unlikely that the 4 and 9 is exactly 4.00000 and 9.00000, they are probably rounded either up or down. So if you took everything into consideration it wouldnt be uncommon to see a 5-10% difference from calculated calories and what the bottle says.

And I don't think on most labels until recently Transfats were counted
