Taking supplements on cardio days

I work out thrice a week and I do my cardio twice a week about 5:30 pm or so for an hour. And was wondering if it REALLY is NECESSARY to take protein shakes and amino acids (supplements) during cardio days or a solid meal is good enough.

Amino's, vitamins and minerals should be taken every day, if you eat enough protein then why take protein shakes at all ( unless it is for convenience).

I found that If I drank a whey drink after my jogs, I would not have muscle pain the next day. So now I drink one after my jogs and after workout. Also a soy shake before bed
