how many exercises to do......

(CLICK HERE here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

for me i'll do 5 different exercices for each bodypart, except for legs. 1 exercice totals of 4 sets. some say its 2 much, some disagree, what do u guys think???

Posted by: syntekz

It's a matter of sets, not exercises for me...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Larger muscle groups I'll do around 6 sets.

Smaller muscles I'll do 2 - 3 sets...

Are you a beginner? If so, stick to the basic movements such as squats, bench, deadlift, etc. Get your mass built up before trying to shape and define it. Quality is better than quantity.

Shape your muscle? Didn't know you could do that...

Start w/ basic compound movements bench, squat, dead lift.Once you attain a good power base & some size then worry about trying to refine & cut up.Don't put on to much fat if you can help it,keep your foods clean & balanced. If you overwork yourself gains will come slowly & you'll feel like you're going nowhere fast.Rememeber---you don't grow in the gym,you grow while you recouperate(the body repairs itself).
I try to stay w/ 3 exercises @ 4 sets of 8-12 reps each for small muscle groups & 4-6 exercises @ 4 sets 6-15 reps for large muscle groups(legs & back).
You'll go thru alot of routines to find what's best for you.

20 sets for bi`s.....I can see them shrinking now!!

It will really depend on your split I think, as the amount of sets I do on, for example tri`s will change if I`m doing a Chest/Tri split compared to a Back/ Tri split.

I'd drop your exercises down to like the others said. You could probably come up with a two week routine where you did diffrent exercises for the same muscles one week to the second then repeat.

Something like for Bi's say

First week
Standing BB curls
Preacher curls

Second week
incline DB curls
Hammer curls

I usually only do, at the most, five exercises per musclegroup. I have recently dropped it down to 3 or 4 though.

Posted by: tigress

I usually only do 3-4 exercises per bodypart. 3-4 working sets per exercise.

Well, general muscle shape is predefined by your genetics, but you can alter the way it looks. It's really not shaping per sey.

Posted by: Prince

For small muscle groups (arms) I do 1-2 exercises, for larger 2-3 (legs).

Maybe with the use of synthol...

Posted by: bigtom422

well, synthol wouldnt be a permanant thing, it is just an oil (or so I thought)

I can generally only do 2 excerses , thats putting all me energy into it. Aslo I most often do the excerise to failure, til I can lift no more both times.

Too much volume! 8-10 sets for larger muscle groups. 4-8 for smaller ones.

Posted by: 101Tazman

3 excerises and 3 to 4 set dependinging on wich muscle group.
Only one min. between sets. In and out of the gym within an hour!

Posted by: big_lou

you can do as many sets and all different sorts of exercises but if you do not have good form then all you are doing is wasting your time!

Posted by: gopro

Good form is essential for sure...but if you do too many sets and put yourself into a state of overtraining, you will not grow...period.

Posted by: stephen71

For arms that too many sets. You should probably only do about 16 sets max for larger body parts also.

If you are natural with average genetics, anymore than this and you will probably overtrain. If you don't, than you are training like a pussy!

I'm only like...45lbs lighter than you. My bodyfat isnt that high (still got top two abs visible) so i'm not doing too shabby.

How old are you btw?

I never said you were shabby, did I? I just said I can make you grow further. I don't care how big or small anyone is...I respect them for getting in the gym and giving it all they have.

Besides, I weigh 254 right now, but have stood next to Nasser El Sonbaty when he was 45 lbs heavier than me...so its all relative.

I'm 33....and GROWIIIIINNNNNGGGGG!

It all depends on your goals, perference, and what works for you.

Posted by: FOLEYMSL

I will only do a total of Nine sets per bodypart. Any more and I find it to be counterproductive. Especially if you go to total failure during the third, sixth, and ninth sets.
