I did just squats as part of a long training cycle (no ham work or calf work !) I did put on 2 1/2 inches on my thighs and 3/4 of an inch on my calf, I didnt notcie any inbalance between my quads to hams but i feel i should of worked my calves directly (but i was more concerend in putting on over all weight at the time).

I do about 5 sets of squats for my leg workout. I do some calf work too.

Olympic style squats (What most people do) hit a lot of major muscle groups: quadriceps, hamstrings, gluts, and hips. The lower back and other core muscles also get quite a workout.

I don't like smith squats because they don't require you to stabilize the weight. Squatting is one of the most demanding core exercises out there. Beyond that, smith squats teach you improper motor patterns which could lead to injury inside or outside of the gym. I've also read that smith squatting puts a searing force on one's knees.

What? I've never seen anyone do anything below parallel in any gym. Maybe it's different were you live...

Posted by: Squaggleboggin

Yeah I've always heard of people going to parallel because they're afraid they'll break their knees or something...

Squats work many muscles but target these muscles.

You don't have to go below parallel to do an olympic squat. Basically, olympic squatting is performed with the bar on your upper traps and focuses more on knee extension (Quadriceps), whereas PL squatting is done with the bar on your posterior delts and the focus is more on hip extension (Posterior chain). That's what I meant.

Where I am most of the people, BB's, squat deep...way past parallel to the floor. A few fat powerlifters squat almost to parallel...but hey they're PL.
