Anyone try them? Are they effective?

Posted by: ihateschoolmt

Don't look very good to me. I think they would just tire out your hip flexers.

Great for a warmup before running

Used to do them as part of the AB portion of my boxing WO

try doing them with your hands on hips & elbows raised off the floor
then tighten and hold your upper abs, by placing your chin on your chest

then do the exercise

I do them with a military cadence, where two alternating raises of each foot
eqauls a "1" count, so... L-R-L-R=1, L-R-L-R=2... and so on, to like 50 or a hundred -

Oh, and the ROM should be 6 inches to 50 degrees

You would be suprised at how some exercises are effective no matter how silly they look, I would have to try something first before I would think it's good or bad.

A perfect example would be those functional workouts like pushing a truck or laying flat on a floor with a sand bag and lifting it up, 5 years ago I would have seen that and said that looks stupid.....they are not, trust me.

Effective at what? Your abs need to be contracted be work fully. Those other two exercises are great.

Have you tried them?

Yes. I used to do 6 inches and sissor kicks a lot.

Posted by: ihateschoolmt

They arn't useless, but there are much better things you can do. So I wouldn't do those.

OK, I guess they didn't work then. Sorry if I came out a bit arrogant but a lot of people like to give opinions about things they never tried.

Lol, I was talking about the truck push and the sand bag press. But those are fine, they cause contraction.

My method for the flutter kicks was like the "Curl-Up" & "Scissor" combined -

Plus I know they work, they do not bring out blocky abs...

But they train your core to be super tough

oops. The sand bag is hard to find.

while the hip flexors are moving your legs here the abdominals are making an isometric contraction to keep the body tight and still. This is how they get worked on this exercise. It is not a bad exercise. When doing planks your body doesn't move at all since you just focus on the isomtetric. Still a great exercise.

don't your hip flexers tire out way before your abs though?

eh, they all seem to tire out at the same time.

Also, aside from that, what is wrong with your hip flexors tiring out? What is wrong with working your hip flexors a little bit? I leave you with this....

the core musculature is more than just your abs. It is everything that functions at your pelvis including your abdominals, hip flexors/extensors, as well as lumbar and thoracic spine. Why not work everything?

I just figured he was asking if it was a good ab exercise. My hip flexers give out before my abs on this (especially with shoes on). But yea, your right.

I used to do a static version of that called "6 inches" during football practice when I played briefly. Basically, we held our feet 6 inches off the ground while laying on our backs. We would also open and close our legs on occasion.

I don't know how effective the exercise is compared to the lifts I do now, but some isometric ab training is probably a good idea. They isometrically contract during a lot during heavy compound lifts.
