Hey,

Im about 160lbs, bulking till December. I normally take in 60grams of protein form shakes on rest days and 80grams on workout days. I try to shoot for about 120-140grams of protein so about 40 grams of protein comes from my diet. My question is, do you think that this is enough?

The standard that most people will give you is 1g of protein per pound of bodyweight if you are trying to add muscle mass. This number is very controversial. I think it's good anyway, but it's necessity is still debatable.

someone whos obese, say 350 pounds, doesnt need 350 grams of protein per day...ive heard this arguement somewhere before, but should it coincide with LBM instead of total bodyweight?

Your suppose to intake 1g per body weight. but thats after you do the equation and remove ur BF form that. Example... you weigh 200lbs. and lets say after you remove your bf you weigh 175. you intake 175g of protien. I dont know the equation but I know you need ur BF%. If your tryin 2 bulk make sure you intake the amount needed, but not so much from whey and protien shakes you need portien from meats. and intake about 3-5,000 calories a day.

Indeed. 1g per pound is just easier if you're not obese. Taking in an extra little bit of protein can't hurt either.

If you really want to determine your LBM, then yes you can use that formula instead. Bodyweight - (Bodyweight * (Bodyfat%/100%)). That is, convert your bodyfat to decimal form, multiply by your bodyweight, then subtract that total from your bodyweight.

exactly...

body composition should be a major factor in determing the protein intake. that's why many like myself go by 1 gram per lb of LBM. whole body muscle protein turnover isn't as great as people think. the human body is very adept at recycling amino acids

Oh, I can assure you im not obese. I am of normal body weight (14-17% i think).

your better off with 1.5 grams of protein per pound of lean bodymass in my opinion

I like 1.25g of protein per pound of LBM. I never really bought into that huge protein intake thing. I just don't see the point of eating 2g per lb of bodyweight.
