Cheerleading

I don't mean to start a riot here or anything, but I was just wondering. How many of you actually consider competitive cheerleading a sport??

Now I want yall to be nice & just state your opinions, no attacking anyone on my post, got it??

I was a competitive cheerleader from the age of 13 to 17 and a damn good one if I do say so myself. My squad came 2nd in state & I competed in nationals my junior year in high school. Now I'm not talking jumping up & down in an itty bitty skirt acting all bubbly & happy yelling go team go!! This was a major part of my life for 5 years, and I respect it & am proud to call it a sport. What do yall think?? Sport?? Not a sport??

BE NICE .

Posted by: Prince

I guess it could be considered a sport.

Hell, they consider golf to be a sport!

Posted by: Prince

The part of this that is debateable is what is the criteria for a game or activity to be a sport?

I had to write a paper on this argument in a upper level philosophy class in college.

Posted by: Prince

Here's an example: Is handball a game or a sport?

Why or why not?

Posted by: Scotty the Body

It was never a sport up here in norther Alberta Canada anyway but I guess if they actually go to compititions and compeat then it would be a sport.

Posted by: seyone

to me it isn't a sport if it is a judged event.
eg.
cheerleading
figure skating
skate borading

all of these are athletic but not sports.
it also isn't a sport if it isn't athletic..
eg.
golf
table tennis
chess

IMO to be a sport it has to be both athletic and non judged.

Posted by: mia mia

Yeah actually I took the topic to our school newspaper a while ago b/c the IHSAA (Indiana High School Atheletic Association) didn't recognize it as a sport, therefore there were no letter jackets, no letters, numbers, none of that high school sports junk. Our squad challenged a football player to come to our 6am practices & he declined b/c "cheerleading isn't a sport."

Whatever

A sport by definition is such an activity esp. when competitive, requiring more or less vigorous bodily exertion & carried on, sometimes as a profession according to some traditional set of rules whether outdoors or indoors.

A game by definition is any form of play or way of playing, amusement, recreation, SPORT, frolic; any specific sport or contest involving physical or mental competition under specific rules.

Hmmmmmmm, now that doesn't really clear up anything, does it?? They sound like the same thing to me.

Posted by: dragonfu

to me it isn't a sport if it is a judged event.
you don't think powerlifting and gymnastics are sports?

Posted by: mia mia

Yeah & aren't football & baseball sports?? They are judged by referees & umpires....just a thought....

Posted by: seyone

football and baseball you win by scoring points not by a judge giving you a subjective number. powerlifting is a sport you lift more than someone. if powerlifting had a judge that said "hm, that guy looked like he lifted it better than the other guy" than it wouldn't be a sport.
gymnastics are in the same class as figure skating IMO

Posted by: dragonfu

if your lift isn't judged proper your world record lift won't count. most of the martial arts tournys i've been to are judged for points and style.

Posted by: seyone

I think the key word here is "subjective" at least thats the way I feel.
good thread, interesting opinions.

Posted by: Mule

I think its a sport. My wife was one from the time she was 12 or so till she was 18. It was rough. Broke her nose 2 times for sure more we think.

Now NASCAR on the other hand is not a sport.

Posted by: Tank316

cheerleading would be considered a sport if: the competitors were all female:and 2nd,they have to be all naked.then i personally will take the time and judge this great event..or a sport.and of course the ages would have to be from 19-25..

Posted by: seyone

that is an interesting take on it Tank. I think they should consider your suggestions.

but why? does being able to break your nose make it a sport? you can break you nose in NASCAR too.
where do you make the seperation?

Posted by: Tank316

mule's wife used to be a cheerleader, hum, interesting.maybe now i see way everybody stops over when mule's not around

Posted by: seyone

shhh, you're gonna ruin it for me.

Awwwww, Tank I'm sorry, but you missed it!! That event has taken place several times!! Where were you for the live show?? But don't worry, they caught it all on tape for you. Just go to your local video rental store & look up Go Team, GO OOOOOOOHHH OHHHHHH YEAH, OHHHHH!!!

Posted by: craig777

My wife was head cheerleader and if I didn't vote for being a sport I would be sleeping on the couch so

SPORT

Posted by: Ginni

Definition of Sport:

Physical activity that is governed by a set of rules or customs and often engaged in competitively.

A particular form of this activity.

An activity involving physical exertion and skill that is governed by a set of rules or customs and often undertaken competitively.

An active pastime; recreation.

So with that definition I would have to go with yes cheerleading is a sport..

Posted by: Tank316

i'm still a judge then..

Posted by: I Are Baboon

No, not a sport for one simple reason: Cheerleaders didn't talk to me in high school.

Posted by: seyone

LOL
in my highschool that wouldn't have been a problem.

Posted by: Jenny

I think competitive cheerleading is a sport! Definately!

I'm a cheerleader myself.. But I'm the "jumping up & down in an itty bitty skirt acting all bubbly & happy yelling go team go!! " kind.. And I would NOT consider that a sport.. I'm a cheerleader for my city's Hockey-team and I'm just there for all the fun.. and for all the free stuff that we get!

This definition is way too broad, almost any activity could be called a "sport".

Well, I would have to make sure your old enough to make a suggestive remark.

But on a serious note. I know cheerleading can be very demanding both physically and mentally. And I know that they workout, yearlong.

Sorry buddy, but an Aussie living in Japan knows jack shyt about US geography, other than Hawaii ain`t too far away

Posted by: ZECH

OK......I thought you were originally from the US. North Carolina is mid Atlantic. Look for Florida, go north to Georgia, then South Carolina the North Carolina!!

Posted by: kuso

Oh wow, you`re the pink state in my trusty WEBSTER`S

Posted by: ZECH

PINK? All northerns in the US are considered Yankees. People who live in the south are southerners and can't stand yankees usually. No offense to anyone on this board!

Posted by: kuso

Ahhhh...........Now I understand why you said you weren`t a yank.

In Australia, and Japan, and for all I know, the rest of the world, ALL Americans are Yanks.......Just like the British are Poms, and Australians are Aussies....no offence to anyone

Let me mark this on my calendar.....

Posted by: ZECH

Sorry about the confusing Kuso........now where is that cheerleader????

Posted by: TooFastForYa

I consider competitive cheerleading a sport because you are going against other groups of people, but I don't consider cheerleading for your school or whatever a sport.

Now NASCAR on the other hand is not a sport.

I'll say chearleading is a sport think of the flexability they have and the amount of training they go through just to yell go team go. On the same note some girls shouldn't even think of trying to be a cheerleader eeww!

As far as NASCAR not being a sport, let's see you sit in a car for more than two hours buckled in and wearing all the safety equipment which only makes the temperature inside the car raise to over 100 degrees. It's more than just driving around in circles at speeds of 200 mph, think about the pit crews and the training they do to be quick while they are performing a pit stop, or the endurance the driver must have to be able to race around the track and finish the best he can.

Posted by: oe40luvr

competative cheerleading? they dont even hit eachother...

Posted by: sharkfin2001

absolutely. The time and effort cheerleaders put into their sport is phenomenal. It's alot like competitive dancing or ballet, both of which are considered artistic expression as well as a sport.

Posted by: mp5man1

Hell ya it's a sport. More fun to watch then golf.

They threw you a diversionary reason. They labled it something that has no clear/subjective definition just to dodge the bullet. The true reason you should get the perks that the other so called sports get is because of the effort and dedication you put in to supporting the school. Isn't there practice after school? pep rallies? fundraising? try outs? minimum GPA? Team work? Blood, sweat, broken bones? I'm sure if you get down to the heart of it, it wont be a definition issue. It will be a budget issue. That sucks!

Oh yes, I lettered in choir in high school ... is that a sport? (hint: I was hunting foxes)

Posted by: DomH

yeah i suppose so, i mean chess is

Posted by: h_townraider

When you make it a competition, it is a sport. If you just motivate the crowd, then no. Hell if poker is a sport, then so is cheering

Posted by: PrecRoy

Golf Rules!!!

Posted by: isenbcc

I believe that Cheerleading is a sport. It takes skill and talent to do some oof the flips and staying in groove with the rest of the cheerleaders.

Posted by: isenbcc

I have taken gymnastics and I would say that cheerleading is very similar.

Posted by: kuso

isenbcc

I gotta ask mate....do have a fucking problem with stuttering or something??????? WTF do you add two or three replies when one would do?????

Posted by: jonny69

jonnie likes cheerleaders.

Posted by: Dj_Frost

Dj_Frost likes the girls that do cheerleadin hehehe
I consider its a sport... I mean, there are soo many other things that require less work yet are called a sport.

Posted by: tuffguy

cheerleaders are HOT ....... so sport, yes

Posted by: sawheet

My daughter is a competetive cheerleader on a national level. there is a difference from competitive and school. school almost anyone can do competitive you need to be an athelete. theese girls work damm hard. they practice more than a football team and they travel and compete hard. they are able to perform gymnastics and stunts that most ppl could never do, sport yes. now this is actually my step daughter that does this and her real dad does not support or has never been to a competition. she is constanly on espn and the local sports network and he still bashes the sport asshole

Posted by: jay

certainly cheerleading is more of a sport than golf

Posted by: calamity528

yeah I reckon it can be considered a sport. But then people call all kind of games and activities sport. I think its a sport but not a sport that would have a chance of getting to olympics or anything like that.

Posted by: linlin_07

okay...
i have been a competitive cheerleader for 4 years..
trust me.. its a sport..
we have to do just as much as any other athlete.

I agree, it is a sport. And god bless you women for putting on those sexy ass skirts and giving my a good stiffy during the pre-game show!

I have been a Cheer mom for many years. The debate on whether cheerleading is a sport or not, is nothing new. But lets take a moment to look at some of the aspects that makes a sport, a sport. You need agility, flexability, strength, and endurance. Regardless of what sport to follow, these qualifactions are there. if anyone was to say that cheerleading did not require ALL of these qualifactions, and you can also add timing, and syncronization, then you have never seen a cheerleading event. I do not expect everyone to claim it as their #1 sport. But I would like to think that we can all respect all sports and the athletes who work so hard at them. Lets face it, if the board game "Chess" was once a olympic sport, then why is it so hard for people to see Cheerleading as a sport? I have my favs in the sports world. Besides cheerleading, I love hockey, equestrian, basketball to name a few. I am not big on boxing or golf but I do respect the athletes and their skills. That is all any of the cheerleading athletes have ever asked from the public. You do not have to like it, but respect their sport, their hard work and their skill set. And by the way, cheerleading has grown on average 800% in the past decade.

Cheers!!!
