I find that it takes an incredible number of reps to max out on shrugs, I can load up the weight to a point where I can only complete 4-6 a set, but it does not seem that doing so few reps on an exercise with such a short range of motion will be affective.

good observation

try holding the barbell or dumbells at the peak of the motion...hold and squeeze your traps for 2-3se each rep. You can go a lot lighter this way and do less reps... This is the only way I can get my traps to grow.

You know what can really build some good traps? Heavy deadlifts.

I just started doing them again
I do 315 on barbell shrugs.....the hard part is my grip is much weaker than my traps

if the working load(s) you are using prohibits you from using a full ROM then you are using too much weight

I just meant that shrugs have a short range of motion in themselves...not that the weight was decreasing it.

not trying to hijack your thread exiled

When doing shrugs ive heard different things about positioning your head. Should you:

A)tilt your head back when you shrug
B) keep it level but tuck chin in
C)semi look down tucking chin in when you shrug

Ive been doing shrugs the same way for about 3 years and that is keep head level and tuck chin in and sometimes when i go heavy its natural for me to want to face more towards the ground. Ive got pretty decent looking traps too.
Have I been doing it wrong.

Do the Hise shrug, rest the barbell on your shoulders.

I get the hise shrug automatically with my squats...traps are always sore after squats.

I think Im gonna go with dumbells and squeeze hold the reps from now on.

one last thought though...When doing front barbell shrugs, is it jus tme or does the bar hit anybody elses dick during the reps?
