Traps.... when do you do it?

Lately I have been doing them in my shoulder lifts..... but I have read in a lot of posts that people do them in their back workouts.....

One of the main reasons why I do them with my shoulder lifts is because of upright rows.... I feel a bit of the movement in my traps....

Both days are days apart in my workout, and would not affect any other body part day if I changed them really.... in fact if I moved them they would be on the same day as deadlifts...

Should I move them?!!?!

thanks

I hit them both days (back and shoulders)...I treat traps like calves

I can't see any reason why traps wouldn't be hit on back day. especially since the traps run from the base of the neck all the way down the middle back

hmm....

im lifting for all strength by the way

should i take it off my shoulder day as well? just do them on back days?

if you are lifting for strength I don't see any reason to hit the traps directly. dead lifting is good enough stimulation for them. shrugs are useless for strength

Indeed. They will also get stimulated by using a full range of motion on overhead pressing exercises and upright rows. You definitely get some scapular elevation during these movements. I also do power cleans periodically, which certainly hit the traps hard. Rowing also hits the middle and lower traps, but I assume you are talking about the upper traps.

If the change would not effect recovery, so shoulder day would not be followed by back day or visa versa, I would say keep them there, on shoulder day.
but otherwise I would drop it since you are going for strength, and it will effect you DL.
I have shoulders the day after back and I do some traps with delts but not a lot, just some barbell shrugs and 21' with dumbbells.
I do keep the same intensity as normally on any other body part, but because of the DL the day before, they are still a little stiff, so a good warm-up and go for contraction instead of massive weights.

By the way, the closer the grip the more traps get involved. The wider the grip, the more delts are used.

if you are training for strength I would definetly drop the upright rows also, for that purpse they are useless...

I found that close grips are really painful for me, and i stopped them a while back. I met a powerlifter last spring who would do a modified type of upright row, with HEAVY dumbbells held at his sides, but the ROM was not that great. to each his/her own, I will do some sets of wide grip uprights every once in a while to hit traps and for pulling power, but Cleans do enough for me aside from the deads. I ran into some of the troubles Mudge was having with his neck, so i backed off the inane super-heavy shrugging.

I agree "T". I stopped working the traps completely. I figure they get plenty of work the way I do my Deads. Once you have the weight pulled, just pull back on the shoulders you guys and you'll hit the trap nicely. Do it this way and save you direct trap exercise for something else.
