Three big exercises...

CHINS (wide pronated)/CHINS (narrow supinated), STANDING BB ROW/DB ROW, SEATED CBL ROW

Both......the idea their is one movement that is best is the stuff of beginners.

BB rows, Yates rows are the best. Out of pullups and pulldowns I would say pullups would offer greater benefit.

I would say both have their place. If I had to pick one or the other it would be pullups. However, it is also a good idea to take a wide and close grip to train both the shoulder extension and adduction function of the lats.

For developing the V I would put pull ups first, closely followed by pull downs. Rows for thickness.
