I am gearing up for a very serious bulking period that will last roughly 14-18 weeks before I switch to a cutting period. I am starting my journal to document the results on Monday, Dec 5th. Over the next few days I am trying to iron out my diet. One thing that I love is PEANUTS. Namely, medium roast peanuts still in their shell. I have a tendency to eat a handfull (apprx. 10-15) about 3-4 times a day. Now I did search and there are a number of threads that cover the topic, but I am trying to determine a finite answer... what are the benefits and are there any negatives to snacking on peanuts daily?
I will include peanut butter in my bulking diet, so are the peanuts overkill? They're just a great quick snack to have on hand and theyre cheap too!! I can grab a big bag of fresh roasted for $1.50. Any advice is great... THANKS!

I think walnuts are a better choice because they have more omega 3 then rest. But peanuts are ok in moderation, i dont know how much you are actually eating but when im cutting i try to keep it below 4 oz because they are very calorie dense.

Did you know that peanuts are actually nuts, their legumes. Crazy I just found that one out like a week ago.

I actually have heard that before, but because of the name, I always think Peanut = Nut. Thanks for the advice on the walnuts over legumes. I currently take 3 Omega-3 Fish Oil caps a day. But I will keep this in mind and maybe switch to a healthier nut.

Firstly - take 6 omega-3 fish oil capsules a day. Better for you.

Secondly - although walnuts are healthy in that they will give you more omega-3 than peanuts (yes, and these are actually a legume) if you take in too many walnuts you may run into problems with too much omega-6...

Walnuts are primarily polyunsaturated fats - but most are the omega-6 kind. And too much omega-6 fats, without enough omega-3 fats to balance them, is a bad idea in your diet...

You want to get most of your fat intake from mono-unsaturated fats, with poly-unsaturated fats being next... And of the poly's you want about an equal ratio of omega-3 to omega-6.

So, if you want them, having the peanuts would be fine - as long as they fit into your required calorie intake/fat intake. But you will have to make sure you are getting those omega-3 fats from other sources (so include the 6-10 fish oils and have some walnuts, salmon and linseeds as well).

I would also recommend getting some of your mono-unsaturated fats from olive oil and avocado - you shouldn't get all your mono-fats from peanuts and these two sources offer a great fatty-acid profile for your health.

Peanuts are also high in mono-unsaturated fats with very little poly-unsaturated fats, which means that you will not run into

It depends on what you are eating them for.

If you want more mono-unsaturated fats and calcium, then almonds are better for you. They also have slightly less fat per oz...

If you want more omega-3 or omega-6 fats, then you are better off going for walnuts.

Almonds are alot more tasty then walnuts, I think.
