Hey,
I'm in college, which really resticts me on what I choose to eat in my diet... and lately I've been struggling to keep up with a 300g protein diet.... I've been filling in with some shakes, but I know whole food is always the best way to go especially when attempting to gain strength and weight.

So I'm looking for the best cost efficient protein source from a supermarket or such... my limitations consists of no fridge, and no microwave...

I was thinking more peanut butter, and tuna (my neighbors might go rip though)... but I can't really think of any other high protein foods to pick up.... anybody know of anything to have at any time of the day as a snack or whatnot?

I think tuna would be your best bet. Or, protein bars (but you have to be careful - a lot of them are filled with crap)

thanks
yeah i think i might go with tuna..... i dont mind protein bars, but i want to get away from the manufactured protein.... im trying to get most of my protein from whole foods

i believe pork rinds are pretty high in protein, although i'd assume they're also packed with saturated fats. but, i suppose they would qualify as high protein, supermarket available and long shelf life.

then there's always spam. or beef jerky.

although obviously tuna kicks all their asses, at least you might get a little variety.

i also recently tried some canned salmon from the supermarket, i thought it was pretty good.

Another good snack item would be beef jerkey - they have lots of protein in them.

WTF

the question was how to get to 300g of protein w/o a fridge shopping in a supermarket, and spam and pork rinds qualify under those conditions. i didn't recommend either, i only offered them. i did, however, recommend the salmon.

thanks, and it is much appreciated.

believe it or not, i might look at spam in the supermarket tommarow...

body fat levels are not much of a concern for me right now.... but i NEED to hit this 300g mark at least daily.... so ill take a peek at those products tommarow.....

jerky..... definetly will take a peek at that too.... i guess the reason why i forgot it was because it is SO darn expensive its rediculous.... but its so good.... aha

oh, and you might want to check to see if your supermarket sells canned chicken breast. i know costco and BJ's sell them in bulk, and it is of the low-fat variety. they're chopped up similarly to tuna.

and, also, jerky costs much less at BJs and costco. a $1.50 strip at the supermarket costs about fifty cents there.

LOL... Oh... But why?? If this guy just ABSOLUTELY has to have 300g of protein then he should be willing to eat anything right? Canned offel and all things of a similar nature included.. So I hear snails and slugs are pretty easy to come by - you could start a worm farm in the corner of your dorm too!! The protein can really add up if you eat enough!

Seriously though - 300g of protein, unless you are 215-230 pounds of PURE muscle - is not necessary and is just a waste of money... If you are trying to gain you might want to look into some CARBS and some healthy fat as well.

However, with that said, although I disagree about the pork rinds ( ) canned meats such as tuna/salmon and (as 'wrong' as it is) chicken as well as dried meats such as jerky (low fat) would be fine if you must eat it......

Emma Leigh has a good point--focusing on taking in the right amounts of fats and carbs would improve the efficiency of your protein intake.

beef jerkey?

Posted by: jaim91

my bad...i didn't look at the other posts. sorry

Posted by: Little Wing

if you invest in a slow cooker aka crockpot and shop daily you can eat better than what you're talking. just don't get caught. but if you do what the hell it's a crockpot...

Oh well, you're probably hotter anyways...

yeah ill do that..... eat more carbs with each meal.... but i still want the 250-300g protein range as well...

im just under 200 pounds, and im in a cycle.... with dining hall restrictions some meals aren't too protein/carb filling... oten though it is but there are those meals that just don't cut it

Posted by: Vieope

Why you dont like shakes? The protein is just isolated from some food.

Posted by: Hlanderr

well from reading here ive learned its so much better to get your protein from whole foods

it just feels better too, and MUCH more fun haha

its not that i dislike shakes, in fact i think they are awesome, and i have them daily, but i dont like having a shake to replace a meal..... it just doesnt feel right....

I'm assuming your in a dorm and have no fridge or stove. Dilema, canned and processed foods=$$$. And the processed foods have very high levels of sodium and nitrates and other nasty stuff...Beef = lips and asses...

I'd invest in a small fridge $39-$59 at best buy, and a butane burning stove (about the size of a phone book) and a George forman grill. Stock up on egg Whites, chicken breast and enjoy real food. The money you'll save on processed garbage will pay for it it no time.

hmm..... definetly considering that....
how much does a butane burning stove cost? that would be ideal for me in the morning and late at night, where cooking eggs would be clutch....
and does it smell strong? not like setting off fire alarms, but as in like gasey which my neighbors might mind

Most reasturant supply outlets (I don't know if you have a reasturant depot) or a outdoor world, or army navy store.

Heres a link online for a glowmaster http://www.stpaulmercantile.com/glowmast.htm. The $45 one is fine no real reason to get the $85 ++. You can probably get one on ebay for less.

No smell at all....just like a butane lighter... the gas comes in arysol looking cans and will run on high for 1 1/2 hours of constant use. Only sugestion is there is a lever that engages the gas can, fully disingage after every use and no gas will leek on you. The only chance of smoke comes from burning your food. I find the butane flame very hot, clean and efficient.....It burns 100%clean. We use them at work all the time for brunches when we set up omlet stations and such a peoples million dollar homes. (sometimes 6-8 running at a time never any smell or complaints.

Good luck
