Is this better for you than oatmeal or are they generally pretty much the same?

They are both great. calorie per volume you can eat more oat bran for the same caloric intake. I also believe it is a bit higher in fiber.

oat bran is indeed more fiberific

Anyone have any suggestions how to liven it up? I thought it was very bland.

Anything you can use on oats you can use with oatbran...

Cinnamon/spices such as nutmeg or ginger
Vanilla essence/extract
Cottage cheese
Whey/protein powder
Fresh berries/fruits
Fat-free/sugar-free natural yoghurts
Stevia (some people use splenda)
Nut butters/nuts
Sugar free jams/jell(o) or jelly
Sugar Free syrups (eg: davinci syrups)
Dried fruits
sugar-free hot chocolate mix/cocoa
Fat-free/sugar free pudding mix

You can also use it to make protein pancakes, protein slices/bars etc etc etc...

according to fitday, 1/2 cup of oat bran breaks down thusly:

Nutrition Facts

Amount Per 0.5 cup
Calories 115.62
Calories from Fat 29.74

Total Fat 3.3g
Saturated Fat 0.624g
Polyunsaturated Fat 1.3g
Monounsaturated Fat 1.12g
Cholesterol 0mg
Sodium 1.88mg
Potassium 266.02mg
Total Carbohydrate 31.12g
Dietary Fiber 7.24g
Protein 8.13g

Vitamin A 0 % Vitamin C 0 %
Calcium 3 % Iron 14 %
Vitamin D 0 % Vitamin E 2 %
Thiamin 27 % Riboflavin 5 %
Niacin 2 % Folate 6 %
Vitamin B-6 4 % Vitamin B-12 0 %
Phosphorus 34 % Magnesium 28 %
Zinc 10 % Copper 9 %

1/2 cup of old fashioned oatmeal, on the other hand, is:

150 calories
2.5g fat
27g carbs (4g fiber)
5g protein

So yeah, with oat bran you are eating fewer calories, and with almost double the fiber...not to mention a good bit more protein.

There was a conversations about this on the boards in this thread a few months ago .... Oat bran is one of those weird foods where the macro cals do not add up to the total cals (similar to wheatbran).
