my coach is online and i have nothing but positive things to say about him. what's funny about that? some of the best coaches in the business are strictly online.

do your research, check credentials and the results of past clients if you can. open the lines of communication and ask whatever questions you may have beforehand. by far the best decision i have ever made in relation to training/diet.

I just fail to see how you can justifying paying for it. How can someone judge your workouts or motivate you from over the internet. Surely all they can do is advise on diet and maybe tweek your training according to the feedback you give them. Well the way i see it is there are many experienced people online who will do that for you for free.

I know serveral guys who have be in the business for many years. They charge a fortune for personal training session and yet if i send them copy of my diet an training they will quite graciously look over it and give me feedback for free. So how does your PT differ from this?

Posted by: Yanick

why not just learn and ask questions and do it for yourself?

exactly that.

I give out advice and answer questions online, but creating a customized diet and training program for someone takes a lot of work, and I would not do it for free. Not to mention talking to them daily, tweaking the diet and training, creating new work-outs daily, etc.

some people like having more guidance, personal attention, and they want to hear what they consider to be expert advice from one source.

true, i guess i was always just a do-it-you-selfer...its why i fix my own car.

maybe i'm just cheap...who knows

i am jewish

Posted by: P-funk

you can pay me and I will coach you.

Posted by: Dale Mabry

I would use an online coach only if:

1)I were relatively knowledgeable.
2)I lived in a place where there were no live trainers.
3)It is substantially cheaper.

Diet is cut and dry, I would have no problem using someone online for that. Training is a little different. An online trainer can give you rep, rest, and set parameters and those are easy enough to follow. Online, you cannot have form critiqued and that is as important as the other parameters. I imagine that well over 75% of the people who read this site don't bench properly, even though the info is there. And that is for an exercise as common as the bench press.

holding peoples hands pays my bills.

Provided the person knows how to train properly (technique wise) it would be pretty easy to draw up a diet and write a training program for them. If it was a complete newbie that needs exercise instruction I think they would be better off finding a trainer in a gym that is qualified to help them learn exercise form.

true, but many trainers will not give much diet and nutrition advice because of the risk of a law suit if they are not a registered dietician.

that is why you come to IM.

Posted by: Prince

right, I just mean that a newbie can hire a PT at a club for a month to learn proper form, then rely on a qualified online PT to get the diet and nutrition advice.

like I said....a good example...she knows how to workout. so she has a coach that puts together her diet and training and she doesn't really need someone to show her how to do exercises (at least the basic ones).

learning is a part of the process. sure, i could devise my own training and diet. i think it's easier to put together a training program than to fine tune nutrition as you go which my coach specializes in. my thoughts are this, i needed a coach for two things: #1 - if i could have achieved my personal goals by myself, i would have already and i can admit where i need assistance. #2 - he'll be doing all my pre-comp stuff. at this point in the game he knows what my body responds to and what it doesn't and is better equiped to get me where i need to be/fine tune pre-competition.

as a bonus, he's become a great friend. post-comp i'll be doing my own stufff but if i need help i know i can go to him in the future.

I am fairly experienced as far as weightlifting goes and I did create my first cuttting diet right here and people were very helpful. In 20 weeks of cutting i lost 23lbs and got down to 11-12% BF. THen i stopped working out due to circumstances in my life. I really want that six pack. I am not sold on swolecat or iron addict - but they seam really reputable. Especially iron addict because he writes alot of articles and talks to you on the phone. I know the diet i put together worked but my diet became to routine and so did the workouts. And sometimes on these forums everybody has their own opinions and somethimes you dont know who is right. be it volume vs. HIT - LISS Vs. HIIT. when to do cardio - and how many times a week. my goal right now is to get down to 8%BF and retain as much muscle as possible. then gain about 15lbs of muscle. So i have been researching the online trainers and i have to admit i am intrigued but the money is stopping me. If anybody can help on my cutting conquest it will much appreciated.

Posted by: P-funk

the first thing you need to do is get your diet under control.

it's a shame how many people use borderline horrible form in the gym on most exercises.

This is true, but often times there is no one right answer. There may be different opinions, each with some very valid points and arguments. It's up to you to decide who is 'right' for what you need.

I watched a guy, a trainer noentheless, do cleans in the gym before the holidays. I cannot even explain what he was doing. He was actually doing hang cleans. He started by lowering his thighs and resting the bar on them. He then sat there for 5 seconds and muscled up the weight, unevenly mind you, for aBout 5 seconds. his end position had the bar resting on his clavicle and his elbows down at his sides. Pretty funny to watch.

my gut reaction is that anyone who needs a personal trainer obviously has some self efficacy and motivational issues.

but then seeing all the noobs at the gym this past week makes me realize that ALOT of people do need the guidance of a personal trainer. However, they need them there in the flesh to help show proper form and exerciseds and all that crap that we just assume everyone knows.

this is why an online personal trainer is rediculous, IMO for a personal trainer to be of worth they need to be there in the flesh!

i disagree.

a lot of people don't need guidance...a lot of people need to pull their heads outta their asses and use proper form rather than trying to show off for the next guy. proper form isn't hard...people are lazy.

disagree again.

I have been online coaching for years and my customers love it. I even do contest prep online and as long as my clients cooperate, it works amazingly well. Obviously I charge about 3X as much to train someone in person, but for those that can't afford it, or don't live close by, online training is an excellent alternative.

It sounds like a good idea. I should do online counseling since I hate people (that is a realy big problem for me being a trainer).

your wrong! I agree that when kids try and do too much weight and there form goes to shit they need their head pulled out their ass!

Im talking about people who just have no fucking clue what their doing. I generally workout in the morning and see alot of older men who just make up their own exercises these are the people who need a personal trainer, and I fail to see how some online trainer will help them out!

yes, I actually would love it better then training people in person! BUT....the thing about me that you may not know is that I am the worst business man ever! I wouldn't even know where to start. I am pretty awful at the business aspect of things. Honestly, if my clients weren't so honest most of them would be getting trained for free because I don't ever track session.

I have a few online clients and I have to say I'm the opposite of you Funky, I love training in person I HATE training online. I guess I'm more of a people person and enjoy that one on one interaction. The online stuff I find tiresome as it ties me to the computer too much and I'd rather be in the gym.

depends on the client. with most of my clients that are fat, lazy and unmotivated I would rather have them pay me to write up a program and email it to them so I don't have to deal with their annoying ass. For the athletes I love to be there and get in the gym and go at it with them. that is fun.

When you put it like that it makes a lot of sense.
And hopefully the fat, lazy, unmotivated bastards will just disappear, I find I just get a lot of whining 'I can't do it', 'the diet's too hard', 'I ache' e-mails though and they are okay to a point but after a while... (like the third one in the same day!) it gets a bit frustrating!

why, you just don't reply....or, if you do it saves the confrontation that you have to have when they are in the gym in you face....for example.....

thanks, yes. I have sent your check for the $500 you requested. Thank you for taking the time to help me. I have been so frustrated..........

Mrs. Piggy,

Thanks for sending the money. Hope you have a nice life you fat piece of shit. In fact I hope you die. You should kill yourself, you are the most miserable person in the world and you are bringing me down with ya. You are a fat pig and you make me sick. The only thing that makes me happy is knowing that we do this via email and I don't have to smell you when you work out. Thanks for sending the money. Hope you have a nice (short) life.

The only thing that makes me happy is knowing that we do this via email and I don't have to smell you when you work out. Thanks for sending the money. Hope you have a nice (short) life.

sincerly,
britchick

Honestly, the ACE certification seemed far less comprehensive to me compared to others out there: NSCA-CPT or CSCS, ACSM, NASM, and ISSA all appear to be more content rich. This isn't to say the ACE is poor; it is a nationally recognized certification that is widely accepted as acceptable. Nonetheless, I like to learn as much as possible. Personally, I'm going with the NSCA-CPT and will go for the CSCS when I get a 4 year degree.
