Here is a good story about spending money on a ring and all that marriage stuff. My roommate had been living with this girl, actually, he was paying her mortgage ($1000), she paid the condo fee ($200). This went on for about 2 years. Then, a month after I move in, everything gets shut off cuz she never paid the utilities when she lived here. The total for cable was $600, the total for power $1100, the total for gas was $300. She eventually paid and gave back the ring, and got no equity, but it was a hassle for him.
