Odd excercise on bench...

Today at the gym I was watchin a rather big guy stacking alot of weigh on the bar... I did a double take and saw he stacked on around 500 lbs... Now at first I though "Is this mofo actually gonna do this shit?" So i'm watching, and he picks it up, but instead of lowering it(as if he were doing a bench press) he just moved his shoulders downward and up. Now is this some type of shoulder excercise or just silly? it was almost as if he was doing shrugs, but horizantally...

Might be working on lock outs??? But that still sounds like an odd way to exercise.

I unrack more than I bench but I don't move my shoulders. I've heard to lift heavy weight you gotta feel heavy weight. Don't know if it helps, but it can't hurt or can it? I really don't know. Could someone help me out on that.

I did those when I was rehabilitating my shoulder from a sublexation, but utilized the same motion with a push-up. This is called a push-up plus.
