Is peanutbutter healthy or not healthy? I searched and i got mixed opinions. more specificaly,is it good for bulking?if so, what is a good brand?

thanks

Natural PB is best. No extra junk in it
Regular is OK but one should avoid the extra sugar, salt and hydrogenated oils.
A great source of vegatable protein, good fats, and energy.
yum
It's high calorie so dieters try to avoid it but it is essential eating for BB's

Posted by: MWpro

It's great for bulking, very calorie dense. Only get Natural Peanut butter for the reasons shm wrote up above.

PB is an excellent source of mono-unsaturated fats and also has some poly-unsaturated fats too! And it is calorie dense (so it will help you with bulking).

Your best bet is natural stuff (Without added salt, sugar or oils)...

Am I missing something? Because I've looked at the labels for natural PB, and I've looked at the labels for regular PB (say, Jiffy)...and the numbers don't look that different to me. An extra 3 grams of sugar per serving in principle does not scare me. Nor does 3g of saturated fat or 140 mg of sodium.

For quadruple the price, I would expect more bang for my buck, I guess.

Sure... not a huge difference but macro's are not the only issue - look at the ingredients...

The sugar is from icing sugar (yup, this is what they use) and the fats are different because they often add a hydrogenated vegetable fat to stop the PB from seperating during standing.

If you are only concerned about macro's then sure, get the other stuff (as you said - the difference is not enough to be worried about)... However, if you are worried about the ingredients of what it is you are actually eating then I say go for the natty....

Exactly.

Smuckers Natural Creamy Peanut Butter
Ingredients: Peanuts, Salt.

Jif Peanut Butter - Creamy
INGREDIENTS: PEANUTS, CORN SYRUP SOLIDS, SUGAR AND SOY PROTEIN, CONTAINS 2% OR LESS OF: FULLY HYDROGENATED VEGETABLES OILS (RAPESEED AND SOYBEAN), SALT, MONO AND DIGLYCERIDES, MOLASSES, NIACINAMIDE, FOLIC ACID, PYRIDOXINE HYDROCHLORIDE, MAGNESIUM OXIDE, ZINC OXIDE, FERRIC ORTHOPHOSPHATE, COPPER SULFATE

Posted by: garethhe

wow, that is a lot of chemical enhancement in the jif. that gave me pause, so here's what's actually in my fridge:

Peter Pan Crunchy PB
Ingredients: Roasted Peanuts, Sugar, Partially Hydrogenated Vegetable Oils (Cottonseed and Rapeseed), Salt.

Much fewer letters than what's in the Jif, at least, and making the only difference with the Smuckers Naturaly PB sugar, cottonseed and rapeseed.

By the way, the Jif has Fully hydrogenated vegetable oils, while the Peter Pan has partially hydrogenated vegetable oils. Is there any significance to being fully versus partially hydrogenated?

And what is it that makes a vegetable fat so bad for you? "vegetable" and "bad " just don't seem to appear in the same sentence too often.

For Canadians:

President's Choice "Just Peanuts" brand (Crunchy or Smooth).
Ingredients: Dry roasted Peanuts

That's it. Good stuff

hydrogenated veggie oils = Transfat.

Smuckers has a Natural PB out that is readily available everywhere including Wal-Mart and it's not expensive.

Posted by: Flakko

I use Skippy Natural PB and it does taste different (better), but dunno about the ingredients though. Also, it has more protein per serving. 8g agaisnt 7g in the regular one

Hey Cha, good thinking. I actually bumped into this very item at a Walmart today, and picked it up. $3.78 for a 26 oz jar of Natural PB. I thought there had to be a catch, but the ingredients are Peanuts, Salt and nothing else.

Peanut Butter is 75% fat overall. 60% of that fat is Oleic Fatty Acid. Oleic Acid is a monounsaturated fat that is commonly found in Olive Oil. Structurally, it has one double bond between the 9th and 10th carbonS. And it is a Cis Isomer. The saturated form of this acid would be a Stearic. 18:0

Of course this is peanut oil, all natural peanut butter, or peanuts.

I like Krema Natural Peanut Butter... It's also a good idea to refrigerate it after you mix it so it stays mixed.

that was really helpful. there was a huge article under the weston price link explaining how canola oil causes cancer and other horrible things. although i use olive oil the most, i do use canola oil from time to time, and i was under the impression that canola oil was good for you. what's the verdict here on canola oil?

Posted by: Gordo

Not sure if there is a verdict on canola yet..... the jury is still out (there have been a few negative studies). Many say it's still pretty good. My preference is olive oil for most of what I do. Canola is pretty good for baking though becuase it handles high heat really well.

What about cottonseed or peanut oil?

I eat a bag of planters nuts sometimes.

It has:

Peanuts, Peanut or Cottonseed Oil, Salt.

Is this bad?

Posted by: DOMS

Appearently, cottonseed oil is very bad for you. It's low in good fats and high in bad fats. Peanut oil is the reverse of cottonseed, but it's a calorie dense food (just like the peanuts it's made from) so you'll need to add it to your diet totals (if you cook with it, that is).

This site has some good facts on oils.

NP. I'm an information junkie.

Posted by: lioness

A plethora of information here! I thought I was doing good to switch to natural PB.

The more I know…the more I realize how little I know. Thanks for the info!

What? So your not?

Posted by: DOMS

Yeah, natty PB is much better than the completely processed stuff. Not the least of which is the sugar and trans fat used is making PB like Skippy.

I got ya dude. My mistake, I thought you were saying All Natural P.B. was bad.

Posted by: garethhe

I was also confused by what you meant, Lioness.

The info provided by 40-yard dash_2 about the fat content of PB is actually reason to eat PB regularly...just in case you're taking that info as bad news.

Is peanut butter good to put in a PWO shake or is there too much fat?

Posted by: DOMS

You should strive to make your PWO shake fat-free. Fats slow down the digestion process which would slow down your nutrient intake when you need it the most.

I use whey isolate. You should try the Grape Splash from PrimaForce.

That's exactly the brand I've been using, and been happy with for about 6 months. Taste's great plain, and is great in a PWO shake.
