Ok, I'm really depressed right now. I just found out that I have a herniated disc in my lower back. As a result of this, I have to get an epidural shot every 2 weeks, and I have to take atleast 6 weeks off.....so no weights, no cardio, no nothing. At the moment, I had been cutting and I was down to 186.....trying to get to 170. I was gradually lowering my calories and I was down to 2800. But now that I can't do anything for 6 weeks, I'm not sure what I should do. Should I continue cutting even though I can't lift or do cardio just by eating fewer calories than I need in order to lose .5-1.5 lbs a week. Or should I just try to maintain? I'm really confused here and could really use some advice. Thanks

Bummer... That is sucky...

If you are fairly lean (lowish BF) then I wouldn't diet while not being able to train... You are asking for muscle loss. IF your BF% is way up there then you may be able to get away with it without a lot of loss.

But you are better off just to eat at maintainence (your 'new' inactive maintainence) and allow yourself to heal. Then get back to things once you are recovered.

Good luck - I hope things go well for you.

Think logically and mechanically about the type of movements you are doing..

Inversion could be helpful to you, and think of motions that will
not directly put your spine in compression or curve to assist the
further movement of that disc... In fact something like pullups
may alleviate the spinal compression...

(This of course only after completing healing and advice of your DOC)

I can definitly feel your pain as I have been recovering from a L5/S1 herniated dic for the past 3 months. I would say just continue eating wel and focus on healing the disc, after tha you can get back on track.

Yeah, I think I'm just going to keep eating clean and just try to maintain. I'll proly just take a few walks a week just to have some activity. Btw, I'm 20 yrs. old, 6', and proly about 17-18% bf. I just don't want to see the muscle I earned while bulking wash away....I bulked from 164 to 190 and had just started cutting when I did this. I'm at 183 right.....the steroid epidural made me lose some weight b/c I couldn't really eat that day. I have 2 more of those, so I'll try to stay at 183 and keep my muscle the next 2 months w/o any working out. Wish me luck!
