Physioball?

Does anyone use this? I've read up on the benefits of using it, but many books and articles that I've read blow it off. Their logic being that many of the free-weight exercises work the same core muscles.

So, is it worth doing?

i use it. I wouldn't base my entire workout around it but you can work it into your training. It is just another tool in the shed IMO.

How often do you use it?

Also, is there any particular material or brand that you would recommend? I can purchase a Gold's Gym leather physioball for around $30. Sound decent?

I have never seen a leather one. You are talking about a stability ball, right? You can get them from performbetter.com or power-systems.com.

I don't use it often as in every workout. If I am doing exercises I will cycle it in...like Db bench press, seated Db shoulder press or prone DB rows. I may go like 3-4 weeks of doing an exercise on it before switching it out to something else.

Other things I use it far:
ab work
hyperextensions
bulgarian squats (this is really really hard)
I use them a lot as a progression for glute bridges for my clients or in my own warm ups
YTA rotator cuff work
reverse hypers
stability ball push ups are damn hard (with hands on the ball and with feet on the ball, toes flexed)
planks with hands on the ball or with feet on the ball (toes flexed) or with only one foot on the ball


they can be pretty versatile. also, good for stretching....sit half way off of it and stretch your hip adductors, you can kneel to the side of it and stretch your lats and pecs.

I think DOMS is talking about a med ball, I know certain companies use the name physioball as a trademarked name for 1 version of the medicine ball. I believe the article is prolly on the Swiss ball, though. If it is a med ball you seek, you should get one that rebounds so rubber is the way to go. You can do everything with a rubber one that you can with a leather one, but not vice-versa. If it is a swiss ball you are lookng at, they only make them out of one material so get that kind.

I'm pretty sure he means a stability ball.

I very rarely use these in my training. I should probably use them more; there are certainly some good exercises you can do with them. I think the only thing I've done with it recently is a pushup with my hands on a small ball for shoulder prehab work. Those are pretty damned hard!

Yeah, I meant a physioball / stability ball. The site I was on had some medicine balls mixed into the physioballs. Go firgure...

I think the benefits are a little overstated, but it is a good change of pace.
