Ran today.... OUCH

I ran tonight with some guys.... I was the first to stop and I stopped a few times after that.
I maybe made it a mile before I had to stop.... this is a huge slap in the face to me. I knew I would have a hard time running, or doing cardio for that matter for the first couple of weeks into it, but I didn't think it was this bad. I did a (legal) cycle a little while ago where I gained some good weight, but I also gained maybe 8 pounds of fat as well in the past few months.

So I want to start running 3,4 days a week now. But, I'm not sure how to implement it into my split.
Here is my split that I plan on sticking to-
1 - Chest
2 - Back
3 - Off
4 - Shoulders
5 - Legs
6 - Arms
7 - Off
8 - Off

My plan is to lift around mid day after I finish my classes, take a few hours off where I have my first PWO shake and probably another small meal, and then run sometime around 6-8 PM.
How is running on day 1(Chest)
On day 3 (Off day)
On day 7 (Off day)

And then after a few weeks I would bump each day forward one
Day 2 (Back)
Day 4 (Shoulders)
Day 6 (Arms)
Day 8 (Off)

I've read many splits with cardio, but I don't want to back away from the lifting at all. I'm really not trying to lose body fat, but rather to get into better cardiovascular shape.
Any input is helpful!

if you're not trying to lose bf, why do you want to incorporate 3-4 days of cardio? i'd throw in a HIIT session or two (day 3 and 7) and that's it, but that's me.

maybe one HIIT session and another form of cardio on the other day.

its not that im NOT trying to lose fat, because i definetly would LIKE to, but thats not my main goal at all.
my main goal is to get into better cardiovascular shape. And of course that will require much more running as compared to someone who simply wants to shed fat off their body....

I really don't like running on treadmills, and I'm planning on busting out the good ol' cleats for HIIT running.
With three days though, I'm not sure which day I should do the HIIT running. Would doing the HIIT running on my leg day be something to consider?
Or do you think I should keep days far from leg workout?

As for different types of cardio, I plan on doing a bunch. If my budget allows it, I plan on getting a sled from elitefts to do some field work... the thing costs a freakin shitload though...

You can get one for $150 thru perform better.

HIIT will get you in much better cardiovascular shape.

don't run on a treadmill. run outside. why do you need cleats?

i told you which days i'd do it on above.

if you can do HIIT on leg day you're not working legs.

a bunch???

you won't be doing anything to preserve lean muscle mass by doing a 'bunch' of cardio.

Hopefully he will be eating, that oughta cover it.

It depends on your goals. If you want to get better at running set distances, run set distances. If you want to just get in better cardiovascular shape, both running/steady state cardio and HIIT can help you do that. If you're not interested in losing weight and want to preserve muscle, eat enough calories to compensate. HIIT is great, but I feel there is too much bias for it in this thread; running is excellent too.... especially if your goal is to get better at running.

My goals are pretty much to cover every aspect possible.... from agility around cones on the field to running long distance.
As for the weight, I will eat a lot, as my goal is to keep my strength increasing and to get into better cardiovascular shape... I understand how HIIT can be overexaggerated in every cardio routine, but I definetly want to do it. I need to look into it though, as I the only thing I really know about it is what it stands for...

I will do HIIT, but I want to be able to cover long distances as well. And when I typed a bunch of cardio, I was regarding to different types.
I'm also looking for an opinion for where to implement the THREE days of running I'm sticking to, not two.... I don't feel that is enough for my goals... maybe its enough for fat loss but that's not my personal priority
And for the cleats question.... I prefer to run on grass or dirt... I guess it just carried over from high school... heres another form of cardio I want to get into - field drills and such with cones and that sled thing i meantioned

Nice.... just checked out the site, thanks

Do you have any experience with such equipment? I'm in between of choosing a sled or a parachute.... both seem to do the same thing but a sled seems more versitile, for example I could run up a hill with it to increase leg strength

I would just jog on your days off from lifting. I might also try and condense your split down. I think that split is crap, and you could get the same results lifting 3-4 days per week. In fact, you may even consider doing some circuit training in your resistance training routines for a little bit to get conditioning up. You would be amazed at how well this works.

HIIT is good, but I wouldn't even bother with it just yet if your cardiovascular conditioning is poor right now. Give it at least a few weeks at a more traditional pace/length before graduating.

No to the parachute, yes I am familiar with alot of the equipment.
