They always hit my kid in the triceps, I asked why not the glutes like when I was a kid, she said "There's a major nerve back there" I know she was talking about the sciatic nerve, I was tempted to say just "go high and outside", but I left it go.
I tried the ventroglute, it was OK, but for me it's real "gristly" and doesn't slide in smoothly, I hate the feeling, but it is easy and usually painless.

i'm pretty sure i heard pirate mention hitting the gluteus medius a little while back, i've yet to try it personally though
