Skinny Surfer

Hello everyone,
Maybe someone can help me out here.I'm 48 years old and have been surfing and training since I was eighteen. At the peak of my surfing I was very light and almost never lifted weights.
I weigh 170 and am 6"3".Now I lift several times a week fairly heavily, surf once or twice a week and do on average 3,000 ab exercises a week. But my body doesn't do what I want it to.Maybe it's an age thing.
Here's the trouble.Legs too skinny, mid section always puts it on when I up the carbs.
How do we take off the tire and build the muscle? Iv'e cut rice, bread, pasta etc.Mostly eat proteins, vegies, some fruit oatmeal.
Which works the best? Maxing the carbs & proteins and doing alot of hard workouts-aerobic or moderate training and total diet control.
My goal is to gain muscle mass and lower body fat.Looking for the balance.Any suggestions will be appreciated. Thanks

Welcome to IM!

A very smart person once said: "Bodybuilding is 100% TRAINING. 100% NUTRITION, and 100% RECOVERY!" It's true!

Why don't you post a sample diet for us to critique? Sometimes it takes an objective eye to see where improvements are needed

You can also check out the sticky at the top of the forum "fat loss tips"...lots of information to get you started!

Thanks for the response w8lifter.Saw your photos, looking good! I agree it is 100% all the way but diet is the toughest to control. Some may think that a guy who's 48 shouldn't care.I think body image is important at all ages.Actually I look 38 from all the years in Hawaii, not to bragg here but I can't complain.

OK Diet?Hmmm? Well I'm a bit of a protein junkie you know the Atkins thing and Protein Power, decided to seriously cut the carbs,at least in the form of rice, potatoes, pasta, bread, diary etc. Here's a sample,Thanks

Breakfast: banana-papaya smoothie or oatmeal & protein drink
Lunch: Chicken Breasts, low fat cheese,Almonds,Can of Tuna ,carrot (5Crackers Whole Wheat)
Snack:Protein Drink
Dinner:Meat,chicken or fish,vegies,egg whites,sweet potatoe
Late:Protein Drink
Lots of water,some friut juices,apples,grapefruit

No milk,heavy cheeses,light read meat,very low beer & alcohol,seldom iceceam
I feel that I'm doing it all right but never could get that Calvin Klein model look

I know that to put on bulk we need to eat alot more, like six times a day.My work schedule is busy and I don't have time for all that food. But still when we eat more we tend to put on the old gut.It would be wonderful if it would go to all the right places.I don't really want to buy larger pants.

Any answer to this common dilema?? I think there is also a certain age when the body begins to stop building and recovery is slow.It would be nice to change the equation. Thanks Suggestions?
