I am giving the tanning bed a try b/c I will be at the beach in a few weeks and I really dont have the time or place to lay out. I was wondering if lotion is really necessary, and if so, what is a good one that doesn't smell like a girl? Thanks

Fake tans rule. Forget the tanning beds. The new self tanners are 3 itterations into product design and they're quite acceptable in performance. Once you go to the beach, make sure you lather up with a SPF product of 15-30.

Excessive exposure to sunlight can impair recovery and reduce protein synthesis. And skin cancer is becoming epidemic in proportions within the population. Risk is just not worth the cosmetic benefit.

Find yourself a good self tanner with vitamin E, and use it for a few weeks before you hit the beach.

Wow, this is new info to me. What self tan product do you recommend? Also, does it look like a tan 100%?

BD, there are a plethora of good products available. Most cosmetic/specialty personal product companies are constantly revising their formulas to maintain market position, so their products tend to be similar in chemical constituency, maybe vary in fragrance and perhaps in stabilizers and the extras (antioxidants, colorants in the case of bronzing self tanners), and in the use of emolients and surfactants/emulsifiers. Loreal has a gel product that is excellent (Sublime) but is slow drying. Neutrogena has several lines that are dependable, and yes...they promote a very realistic looking tan.

Note that you must prep your skin properly to get the best result for color uptake and retention. I recommend purchasing inexpensive surgical style glvoes to avoid staining the hands. Product must be allowed to dry to avoid staining clothing. Frequency of reapplication depends on the degree of tanning, skin chemistry, and how often you remove it by bathing.

Some of the vitamin-E containing products really help promote better skin quality as well. Most self tanners do not contain UVB and UVA blockers; these products must be applied 30 min before sun exposure to be effective, andshould be reapplied every few hours.

(damn, I sound like a commercial...)

People are going to tan anyway. Myself included It's difficult to be in the AZ sun without a base tan no matter how much sunscreen you use and a base tan always helps me so that I don't burn. I'm so fair that even with billion proof sunscreen I will still burn. So with a tan and sunscreen, I am much better off.

Anyway, back to the question. For tanning bed lotion, California Tan is my favorite. Also they sell a product called Insurance that you put on after any sun exposure and it helps heal the capallaries so you don't burn.
