Should be an interesting fight. Brinkley is finally steppin up to the plate to fight a real fight. No Contender bullshit I'm hopin. Spina is a good combo of speed and strength and is pretty well known around here. 12 rounder. Tonight on ESPN2 @ 9.

what's the word from Vegas on the fight? This is title fight for the WBC US Super Middleweight division...Joey Spina (17-0-1, 12 Kos) and Jesse Brinkley (26-3-0, 17 Kos)

So Brinkley's moved up in weight, and he squeeked thru in the decision over Tony Bonsante...and he had to drop down to make weight.

No way.. I'll take Spina. .

Maybe go the distance, Brinkley supposedly is a technically better (probably better training), maybe a little faster...but here's the kicker...

"At 6ft 1in Spina is three inches taller than Brinkley and he started his career as a light-heavy.... whereas Brinkley was a welterweight when he turned professional."

Over and under?? Looks like Vegas is backing Brinkley. Typical.

Yeah, I like Spina, an underdog going in, but taller, longer reach. Could go either way, don't see an early knockdown, but our boy has a chance if he uses his jab to tire out the stripped down Brinkley, who's not gonna be in peak form, droping weight.

Shoot, I may have to start watching as few bouts if boxing gets interesting again.
..but thats why you keep your bets light in a fight like this.

I watched one of Spina's recent fights. I think it was around Thanksgiving. He got dominated the whole fight by some veteran whose name I'll never remember. I turned it off only to tune in later to find out it was a tie. Couldn't believe it. This one could go either way.

That was Jose Spearman, kind of a hack, 10-rounder. Spearman's a southpaw, part of Spina's problem, I guess, since its an awkward stance to fight against.

Wow. Spina is lucky cause he was getting completely owned that whole fight. He looked like shit while Brinkley countered everything he had to offer. Props to Spina for hangin in there and finally landing the shot he needed.

Spina, Godfrey KO foes!

Wednesday, May 10 2006

By "Irish" Pat Kelley and Billy "Loops" Luppert at ringside

Unbeaten super middleweight Joey Spina (18-0-1, 13 KOs) scored an eleventh round TKO over Contender: Season One star Jesse Brinkley (26-4, 17 KOs) to win a bout that was still in doubt on Wednesday night at the Foxwoods Casino, Mashantucket, CT. Behind on the scorecards, Spina landed a right hand to the body that doubled over Brinkley. Spina then dropped Brinkley with more body shots. Brinkley beat the count, but after another barrage by Spina, referee Michael Ortega stopped it at 1:50. Spina retained his USNBC belt.

F*CK Yeah! I can still call 'em!!

*smiling sharklike* Been awhile. I followed it hard, when Tommy (the hitman) Hearns was fighting out of the Kronx Gym, in my hometown (Detroit)

Goodfella, you keep posting these fight threads and I may just paste up a few as well.

Time to get reacquainted with the sport of boxing again!

TKO in the 11 th, Jesse can't take a body shot....time to retire Jesse you pussy

Posted by: Goodfella9783

I couldn't belive that 11th round. I'm not doubting the body shot, but after the last barage before the stoppage, Brinkley just sort of spit his mouth piece out while heading to his corner. He must of been in a shitload of pain, because he clearly knew he was ahead on the cards even with the locals. What ashame to give up all that work.

Anyone notice that Manfredo Sr. was part of team Brinkley?

Well...I tactfully edited an early post that said both these guys, despite their records, didn't look like hot shit to me.

You got a boxer who you gotta pull down that much to make weight, right there, I know he's not gonna make it in the later rounds. Get too tired, too much weight lost, started to get winded, especially if he has to do a lot of chasing in earlier rounds.

All Spina had to do was hang on, works his jabs and use that long reach for a solid snearker shot to the head.

I called it square. Note, that despite the KO record for these guys, you could tell...too many opponent fights inflating the numbers, not enough good boxers fought to sharpen their tactical skills. No early KOs in this fight scenario.

Real good trainers can take a mediocre fighter and squeek him into a a shot at the title...maybe even grab it, if there isn't a young up and coming fighter in the ranks who is hungry, and fast and smart- with a decent trainer as well.

That's why I like boxing. Its a strategy sport, one of the oldest in the world.

Next best thing to chess. Good fight, you stand, screaming, more than sitting.. Mdiocre fight, you watch with interest, maybe yell a bit when you see good set of combinations thrown..but nah, not worth gettin your panties in a twist.

Round 32, I submit spina with an anaconda choke, and then sub goodfella with an arm bar.
