I cup of water, 3-4 scoops of designer whey chocolate protein, 1 banana, ice cubes. Put in blender, and server.

I drink this after a work out, and in between meals some times. Is it good?

Are you cutting or bulking? I might add some more carbs in like oats or something.

Yeah, are you bulking or cutting?

How much do you weigh? How much protein is that? (A lot, I would guess).

If this is a post workout shake, you should add some higher GI carbs. Instant oatmeal is okay, ricecakes are good.

Ideally you want 2:1 carbs to protein after your workout. Some people use dextrose, that could be a possiblity for a bulking program. So could a bagel or two (although I don't personally recommend either of these for cutting).

What are your goals?

Either way, this isn't sufficient for post workout, as far as I'm concerned.

What are your thoughts on Quaker Multi Grain Rice cakes PWO with a protein shake on a bulking program?

For some reason or another most reccomend that you use the non-instant style of quaker oats. I personally think the 1-minute ones are fine.

Good choice.

When bulking, I'd get the more calorically dense varieties, though. Like caramel and toffee, etc. Otherwise you'd have to eat a lot of them...

You still need some fast acting carbs after your workout. Try a few rice cakes on the side, if you're gonna use quick oats or regular oats instead of instant.

besides rice cakes, what are something else I could use?

I thought the banana had enough carbs in it.

also, how many shakes can I drink a day?

Designer is around 17 grams of protein a scoup right?? If so then 3 scoups is all you need.

Banana has carbs, yes. They are mostly fructose. You want a good amount of glucose.

I think milk sugars (glucose+galactose) are great after a workout. Mix your shake with skim milk instead of water. L/f f/f chocolate milk is also fine PWO if you keep your total calories in check for the day. After adding that and the banana, if you still don't have the right ratio of carbs to protein, then add something like this:

rice cakes
sugary cereal
malto or dextrose
a fat free tortilla
instant oatmeal
white rice

anything like that will be fine as long as it's fat free...But watch your totals if you're cutting.

This is the kind of thing you should consume ONLY post workout.

So have this shake anytime you workout.

As far as a snack goes, just use your original shake: banana plus PP. Unless you're bulking.

No, you need about 2gms of carbohydrate for every gram of protein.

You need 80gms of carbs for this PWO meal.

thats gotta be expensive.
Why not use allthewhey? I'm not looking for a plug on someone else's product but damn, 17g in one scoop? Thats kind of low. allthewhey has so many sizes. I usually do a month on 20 lbs of their whey protein.

Posted by: juggernaut

btw-my pwo drink is a cup Old Fashioned oats, a banana, tsp of dextrose and 2 scoops of whey.

OK, I think I would need to cut back on the protein or I'm looking at ~500calories PWO which is a little high for my current plan (total daily calories ~3000). What about this for a bulking PWO meal:

Quaker Multi Grain Rice Cake 1g(F) 12g(C) 1g(P)
Whey Protein Shake 4g(F) 8g(C) 20g(P)
Banana 0g(F) 27g(C) 1g(P)
Calories=287.

Posted by: juggernaut

a banana has 27g of carbs? didnt know that.

Try this website: http://www.calorieking.com/
Just type in the food you want the calories for in the "food search" and then select it on the next page.

Quick oats are fine - especially PWO.

But if you are 180 pounds.... Do you REALLY think you need that much whey?!

1 cup milk = 12g carb, 8g protein
3 scoops whey = <5g carbs, 72g protein, <5g fats
1 banana (assuming 114g flesh) = ~25g carbs
2 'scoops' oats (assuming 60g) = 40g carbs, 7.5g protein, 5g fat

TOTAL = ~80g carbs, 87.5g protein, ~10g fats

That is nearly half the amount of potein that you would need for the entire day...

The carb level is fine (although I would consider swapping some of those oats for some non-starchy glucose sources), but you need to cut the protein by about half.... Something with a total of ~40g (so a scoop and a bit of whey should be plenty when combined with a cup of skim milk).
