Odd feeling after Dips?

I don't know about the rest of you, but I ALWAYS have an odd sensation in the shoulder area after getting off of the dip bar after a set of dips. It never feels like something is hurt or pulled, nothing ever keeps me from doing reps/sets, but just a general discomfort after every set.
--Does anyone else get this?
and
--What, physiologically, is this?

Thanks,
Zack

Check the width of the dip bars. If they're too wide, your shoulders will have more stress placed on them than if the bars were closer. I prefer the bars to be shoulder width to just outside shoulder width.

I'm just throwing this out there -
The first thing that came to mind would be the stabilizer muscles in the shoulders. In military presses, you develop stabalizers when weight is above the head. When on those bars, you maintaining balance below your head... maybe the stabilizers are fatigued, leaving a strange tingly/weird feeling?

You might be hyperextending your shoulders, or coming close to it. I think it's a good idea to get a little forward lean and not force excessive ROM on this lift. A lot of people are probably just fine with that angle of extension, but I don't like to take my chances.

If you ALWAYS get the pain from this exercise, then just don't do it. It might just not be a good exercise for you for whatever reason. I haven't done dips or skull crushers in a long long time because they seem to beat up my elbows really bad and give me pain. No big deal. I just don't do them.

i say warm up for a longer period and focus on stretching and doing some raises with light dbs before doing any shoulder work

I always get that pain too. It usually is just from the first set, and gradually goes away by the time I am done.

thanks for the info guys. Its tough. I wouldnt call it PAIN, just not a nice feelings, kinda a quick fleeting ache. I'm going to try warming up better, shortening the ROM, making sure im only shoulder width apart, and leaning forward a little, and Ill see if it feels any better. if not maybe Ill just cool it for a while. Its just never felt GOOD to do.

Thanks again
Z

Sounds like pain to me, but you just don't want to give up the exercise, heh. I had to cut them out for a while too while rehabbing my shoulder; such is life. I still can't do upright rows, nor do I care to.

Yeah, I love weighted dips as an exercise, but they stress my shoulders a good bit... I've gone to rotating them every other week now.

perceptive cowpimp! heh, its very minor pain yes. if it was anything bad I would stop right away -i'm not one to conciously hurt my body just to finish a set . Alternating sounds like a good idea too. Its just hard for me to think of another compound exercise that works the chest, triceps and shoulders all at once!
