Former Dr. James Shortt was sentenced to one year and one day in prison.

A former doctor was sentenced to 12 months and one day in prison for conspiring to illegally prescribe steroids to NFL players.
James Shortt spoke before a judge Monday in Columbia saying the steriods were used for healing and repair.
Shortt pleaded guilty in March to one count of conspiracy to distribute anabolic steroids and human growth hormone. As part of the plea deal, prosecutors dropped 42 other counts against Shortt.
Some of Shortt’s patients included former and current members of the Carolina Panthers, prosecutors have said.
After hearing Shortt’s statement, the judge said Shortt showed a lack of remorse and sentenced him to 12 months and one day in prison, which allows him to qualify for good time. His sentence could get shortened to 10 ½ months.
Shortt faced a maximum of five years in prison and a $250,000 fine, but was only fined $500.
Shortt has 10 days to appeal and his attorney indicated he would. The judge will allow Shortt to remain out of jail until the conclusion of appeal.
Shortt’s son, Andy Shortt, spoke during Monday’s sentencing. He said he plans to marry Aug. 8 and nothing would mean more than to have his father at the wedding. An appeals process could take a year and half so it’s likely Shortt could attend the wedding.
The South Carolina Board of Medical Examiners revoked Shortt's medical license in May. Shortt said Monday he was sorry for what he had done and accepted the fact that his career in medicine is over.
Shortt now lives in California with his family. If he has to serve prison time he will go to a facility close to his family in Dublin, California.
