Pride: The Real Deal

The "Real Deal," is that PRIDE has built a stadium in the US. The first scheduled fight in the United States will occur October 21.

So far the confirmed fight card:


Fedor Emelianenko vs. Mark Coleman
Mauricio Rua vs. Kevin Randleman

Cro cop is also supposed to be fighting this beast, but it's not confirmed yet.

Believe it when I see it. They will have to alter rules much like the UFC did to be a sanctioned event in the US.

That would be very unlikely. They are both business trying to grow. Niether one of them wants to suffer at there fighters losing to the other.

All they care about is what the PPV value is and ticket revenue. If you pay for what they offer they will keep giving you mediocre fights.

Well we watched it back in 1995, I think it was the same federation back then??? Back then it was much more like a street fight, now it is watered down with too many rules.

Yeah I started watching when it started on PPV I think in 93.

They were forced to change the rules by the US Gov. They didn't have a choice , no place was able to host the event, nor were they going to be allowed to be shown on PPV.

Dana has done a good job marketing the UFC but the rule changes needed to happen or it would no longer be around.

i agree with Foreman on this one. UFC is crap compared to Pride, knees and stomp outs are cool to watch and add another dimension to the fight.

Old UFC's you could pull hair & shit. I'd rather watch fighters give a display of their athleticism with a few rules attached.

aren't knees only allowed when clinching/standing up? i'm pretty sure you're not allowed to knee your opponent when he's on the floor. could be wrong though, i just never see it in UFC and just recently i saw Fedor knee the shit out of minotauro (i think it was minotauro).

No you can't knee somebody while they are down.

Well. As it is Pride does not allow elbows and UFC does. I dont really much enjoy watching soccor kicks to a downed opponents head anyway. Knees are a crucial part of the game though and I wish they fell within the law in the states.

As for Pride VS. UFC. I was quite excited when they brought Silva out to have his 'stare down' with chuck liddel about a month ago and announced the two companies LHW champions would be fighting.. but from what I've been reading it seems that deal fell through or otherwise is not likely to happen

I'm excited to see Fedor fight again, especially in the states. However you look at it, it's a positive thing for MMA fans to have pride coming to the USA and putting pressure on the UFC to keep their events exciting. Competition is always good motivation and I love both promotions as well as most of the smaller ones.

True story. The rules instituted by the UFC were mandatory because John McCain was going to have it shut down. UFC is still sanctioned by only 22 of 50 states.
As far as the rules, it was a huge moneymaker for the UFC. Nobody wants to watch a fight and see somebody permanently brained damaged or killed. The rules allowed the UFC to go mainstream. It continues to grow and will quietly phase boxing out...thank God!

All 50 states can get it on pay per view but just can't have UFC events in their state?

Foreman will argue that last sentence.

Yep, 22 states have licences to hold live events.

i am flying out to vegas to see the first pride event in the U.S. regular section tickets are like $300, but its worth it i can't wait.
