Digesting Whey.

I have been told that consuming carbs with or shortly after a Whey protein shake will reduce the amount of protein that you actually digest. And, to get the full amount of protein in the serving of Whey, you would have to consume it alone with no carbs what so ever. Just the powder and water. Is this true or not?

Thanks alot.

I believe this topic was discussed in a thread not long ago where a research article was brought up. It concluded that there is no evidence that separating proteins and carbohydrates (or fats) into other meals is beneficial.

As in compete for absorption? Haven't heard that one. If anything a lot of research shows the opposite....that carbs with whey will actually help shuttle the protein into the muscle via insulin.

the opposte is right consuming carbs with protein is essential for muscle building ...insulin is released when carbs are consumed ...you have to consume high G.I. carbs post workout with protein....

It is not essential to consume carbs with whey. protein, in and of itself, is insulinogenic enough to be shuttled into muscle tissue. Your body is not stupid and will absorb protein just fine without carbs. If it didn't we all would not be here today.

Especially post WO where the mechanical stress on the cell wall increases absorption of nutrients across the membrane (via GLUT4 receptors being activated to take pro/carbs in).

cool .. that's nice info ..but ofcourse carbs also increase the absorption or even make it easier ...
