MTB question

I'm looking for a hardtail mountain bike in the $500-$600 range. I'm hoping to have at least Deore components. Any brand/ model recommendations? Also, if anyone knows of a good source for used bikes, please let me know.

Most major bike manufacturers make decent bikes in that price range. Go to your local bike shop and ask around. Most bike shops will be honest with you. Don't worry about haggling over the price, either. Bike dealers make little money selling whole bikes, so plan on paying sticker. All their money comes from selling individual parts and service.

Trek, Specialized, and Cannondale are three mass-producing companies that offer some decent, lower-priced bikes. You might want to look at a Specialized Hardrock, Kona Scab or Kona Blast.
Also, check out this link to see all kinds of different bikes. They list the prices.

Good luck, and go ride!

Thanks for the info! Do you have a brand preference of the ones you listed? I've read so many varying opinions about frame geometry and such that it's hard to know what to look for.

Personally, I'd pick Kona (I almost bought one), then I'd pick Specialized. Two excellent companies with high customer satisfaction. But all four brands are good bikes. With technology the way it is, it's hard to buy a bad bike. You just need to try some of them out to see what feels best for you. Most bike shops will let you take a bike for a spin before you decide on a purchase. You are right that it's hard to know what to look for. But from brand to brand, a $600 bike will contain pretty much the same quality parts, regardless of the bike manufacturer.

Buy used is the only way you will find a decent bike for 600

Kona In 2000 I got da Kona Blast, real good frame(alu), that 's what really counts, the frame!!!
The rest you can change over(update)
But get yourself a GOOD FRAME...

Hmmmm...did I say that a good frame is essential?

And then again,it all depends on what kind of riding you intend on doing...XC,DH,Freeride...
But get a good ...

Not true. It depends on the type of riding you do. If you're a downhill racer, then sure, you won't find a decent bike for $600. If you are a casual rider who only rides on fireroads, doubletracks, and easy terrain, there are plenty of decent $600 bikes on the market. Stop confusing Var with blanket statements like that.

Thanks again for the info. I have actually been looking for something used, but the selection is limited in my size (I'm 5'6"). I'm mostly looking to do off road single track stuff. Would love to get a FS for downhill, but you can't find a decent FS for under a grand.

You're right about not bein able to get a decent FS for under a grand. You would have to go hard tail for a decent bike. I currently ride a mostly Deore bike, use it for racing and xc riding and as long as you look after it at lasts quite a while. And remember the bike can only go fast as you make it. (sounds a bit corny but its true)
And a good source of reviews on bikes check out
www.mtbr.com
they have reviews posted by mtbers who have riden / tested products its definatly worth a look.
