Sometimes when I want to find an old thread, I know about what date it started (based on events that occured around the start of the thread).

For example, if I want to find a thread that discussed the 9/11 events, sorting the thread by the start date would make it easy to find. However, threads like that can last for weeks, making it tougher to find if you are looking for a date.
