i had this about 7 months ago from drinking too much on st patties day and almost died. its a long story but i lost the muscle in my left deltoid. when i say lost i mean it actually calcified (it broke down). ive gotten merely tiny amounts of strenth back. i cannot should press. at all with my left delt. its really depressing actually. anyway...

is there any doctors on this message board because it would be really great to get some more info.

Two things, number one, people don't realize that alcohol binging can cause rhabdo,( there are numerous case studies to support this) ; number two, but it seems odd it only affected your deltoid. It is not to say the rhabdo from acute alcohol poisening or binge drinking has to have a uniform effect (affect all the muscles uniformly ) because there have been case studies that selective rhabdo has occurred with alcohol but it usually involves the quadriceps. I suspect you had massive diffusse rhabdo and almost destroyed your kidneys, the "melting" of the muscle cells then caused compartment syndrome in the deltoid which caused this area to suffer the most damage. ( compartment syndrome is most common in the calves but it can occur in the deltoid due to its fascia tissue.)

Alcohol directly injures the sarcolemma and increases sodium permeability. This in turn increases the activity of the Na+,K+-ATPase pump, with the eventual exhaustion of energy stores. Increased cytosolic Na+ enhances the accumulation of cytosolic Ca++, which in addition to increased mitochondrial Ca++ causes cellular injury. This toxicity is enhanced if your potassium storage is already low (ie: due to chronic alcoholism or recent diuretic use).

In addition, it also makes me wonder if you weren't getting any corticosteroid shots in your delt (these corticosteroids can prevent appropriate muscle and tendon regeneration.) However, usually , its effect is on the tendon it has been directly injected into rather than affecting the body of the muscle attached to it.

I am sorry to hear about what has happened, as for wether the delt muscle will come back to normal or not? My experience has mostly been with my fellow mountain bikers who do the 24 hours of adrenaline with me who get rhabdo from compartment syndrome in the calves, some of these people never regain the calf strength or size after this happens.

yes i had renal failure. all of my organs failed. im back in good health now except for the loss of my left anterior, medial, and posterior deltoid. I forgot to mention that my left lat is gone too. i also never recieved or corticosteroid shots either. would that have helped much? i do alot of physical therapy but it doesn't seem to be doing much of anything. i also want to point out that i had Rhabdomyalisis and not Rhabdomyalgia (spelling).

Just out of curiosity, were you using anabolic steroids at the time? The curious bit is the localization of the damage.

I think you will be waiting on stem cell and nanotechnology, as well as some genetic engineering.

REally sorry to hear about your problems

yea, I wonder about that.

Honestly though, from the photo in your avi, you look pretty proportional.

What are they doing for you in PT?

no i wasn't using anabolic steroids at the time. my avi is before my accident. and doing just about every deltoid excercise you can imagine....with great difficulty. to give you an idea of how weak my left delt is, i can just barely do a shoulder press not even with a dumbell just my arm. my right arm is great though. i can put up a decent amount of weight with my right one. doesn't make much sense...
