So what are your thoughts

As much as I dislike the Giants, both him and his brother are class acts. I'm glad another good RB decided to hang it up in his prime, instead of destroying his body for a few records..

Kudos to Tiki for an excellent career.

Certainly no offense to Tiki but I can't understand how a true competitor can retire in such a way. The way I see it is if you really love the game (whatever game that may be) you play until either your skills have diminished to the point you're no longer a viable option or injury.

I know this doesn't sound like the intelligent way but I'm so damn competitive I couldn't see leaving any other way.

I can.............you get beat up and tore down week after week. Look at the Bus. After a game, all he could do is hobble. All that contact wears on your body, and most people don't realize how bad some of these guys are in pain or how they are affected for the rest of their lives because of all the beating they recieve. Tiki is in relatively good shape/health. He still needs daily massages/accupunture, so I would get out too!

Not my point DG. I was speaking to one's competitive spirit. I'm a die hard competitor and I can't see throwing in the towel until I need to. It's to much fun competing day in and day out. Life wouldn't be the same without it.

He isn't going away from football, I believe he is part owner of the NY AFL team.

I most likely would try to gut it out too, but I have no idea what his daily routine is like, he may be going through more pain than I could imagine. Not to mention the NFL doesn;t really need to honor their contracts, so he could get busted up and be shit out of luck.

It's not fun when you can't get around due to pain every day.

After putting in the daily grind for as many years as he has, I can totally respect him hanging it up.

Posted by: SpeedyReedy5

Even though he doesn't have a ring I'm glad he is going out on a good note unlike some of these athletes who try to do to much, and it ends up reflect on their career and have us thinking why didn't they retire

^ Like Emmit Smith ^

His stay with the Cardinals was horrible and really made him look unemmit like, as if that is a word.

I would question his timing, couldn't he have waited till the season was over.

Posted by: largepkg

All of you who praise him, you forget one thing. He's at the top of his game! Very few good players leave at the top. The reason is, they love the game and the competition. Tiki's reason for leaving can only be selfish and some of you respect that, I don't.

If this is his choice then why make it now? What does he gain by doing it this early in the season? The only answer I can come to is "fan fair". If that's the case then he sucks!

Both the barbers are pretty well spoken guys and I think have careers lined up
after their game days are over...

Why kill yourself when you can earn a living sitting behind a desk

From what I understand he was overheard discussing it with his brother, when the reporter who was eaves dropping confronted him about it, he admitted to it. He had no intention of announcing it during the season.

Well it's his life. Of course he's going to do what HE wants to do. Do you think he should keep playing simply because it's in the best interest of the team?

I think it's great for Tiki that he's decided to retire. He's a bright guy that has a lot of other options besides football. We should all be so lucky.

I certainly understand this point of view. My only contention is, if you love the sport so much to play and take the riches it gives you why go out when you're obviously still at the top of your game?

From my perspective, I couldn't leave knowing I'm still very good. I and many others would kill to have his talent and perceive this as a lack of passion for the sport.

I certainly don't condemn him for his decision, although I don't completely agree with it.

Alright, well say this for example. Tiki doesnt retire, and goes on till next season. Tiki gets hurt in the 3rd game of the season and is out for the rest of the season. Now what?! Hes gunna be kicking himself in the ass for second guessing himself instead of just retiring. Thats my thought. I say he leaves while hes doin well, and retires. Hes better off.

What kind of example is that? It's football for christ sake. There is a possibility that you get hurt on any play but look at all the players who still play. Should they retire to?

If you love someone enough to marry them , why get divorced?

It's very possible to love someone or something, but not love the consequences. I'm sure Tiki loves the game of football but sure doesn't love the pain he is in all the time, not to mention he has a wife and kids to think about. Putting his body on the line for your own glory while having a family at home worrying about him all the time is flat out selfish. I'm sure this decision is best not only for him, but the people around him as well....

*Newsflash* There is life outside of football for some of these guys....

Again, I said I understand the position. From my perspective, I don't like it. There are many out there who would play for free because they love it. This is my only point.

*Side note* I play damn near every major sport now and I can barely walk the next because of it. Will I give it up? Fuck NO! I love the competition.

I know, why give a fuck about the people around you, you're all that matters.

What people around me?

I'm not married, I have no children, and I enjoy playing. I don't see the problem.

Everyone gets old and breaks down. You should enjoy the ride while you can.

Exactly. That's why you are having a hard time understanding where Tiki is comming from. He did enjoy the ride, and now he's gonna get off before the airbags deploy. There is nothing worse for a football fan to see his favorite player struggle on the field, performing at only a fraction of his former self. I'm not a huge Jerry Rice fan but that was hard for me to watch. I have mad respect for a guy that can hang em up when it's time. It's just Tiki's time.

I completely agree with you there. The thing is Tiki isn't even close to that point yet. The man is arguably the best RB in the league. When the skills start to diminish, he should bail IMO.

Don't get me wrong. Tiki has to do what he feels is right and I'm down with it. I just can't imagine doing what he's doing, that's all.

I hear ya. It's hard to put out that competitive flame.
