He said the word "practice" in that clip more than he actually has practiced his whole career. What a waste of talent.

I wish douche bags like that and TO, that are just a cancer wouldn't get picked up by any team.

Why does he sound like a drunk old man?

AI is a good guy, get off his back b/c he looks conceited on the court. He's given millions over his tenure to local charities and is known as a community player. If you poll the NBA for the hardest playing player I guarantee he'd be in the top 5. He can coem off as selfish on the court b/c he has no team, and off the court b/c he is the only correct player ever to say that he is the team.

He had that one stint of domestic abuse that he immediately apologized for, and came out publicly against abuses and explained what happened. Even Jason Kidd has had a domestic charge.

Don't hate him b/c he's tatted up and passionate. I wouldn't want him on the Wizards b/c we don't need a PG, but I have the utmost respect for the guy.

Was this before or after you learned how to spell Georgetown?

That's the appeal Jordan had, he was very well spoken.

Don't get me wrong, I also butcher the english langauge with my New Yawk accent, but I am not in TV.

With all that money he has he could take speech classes.

Speak smart in public and just speak your langauge among your people.

If you ever heard Patrick Ewing talk to his buddies in private you'll notice he will have a thick Jamaican accent, in front of the cameras it disappears.

I can't believe he came out from there...

Knowledge of correct speech doesnt necessarily mean you should change it. The way you speak is as much a part of you and your culture than anything else.

Hmmm....I disagree.
I tell the young kids on my block to learn how to speak properly, leave that ghetto shit on our block.

I tell them if a Police offficer where to stop you or pull you over you talk to them properly.
Not like "Yo, wassup po po."
The surburban cop will not like that at all.

Presentation of yourself has a huge impact on how you are percieved and accepted.

I agree with the police speech, but his grammar as a whole was better than the majority of the rest of the NBA. It's been a couple days since I saw it, did he even curse? It's not ghetto speak anymore like it was considered 20 years ago, now it should be considered an entirely different accent. African American city speak should be considered no differently than a southern drawl or a Canadian oot and aboot.

To the adult, white community. The way he spoke there had no ill effect on how I perceived him, I'm glad he was himself and not the "default answer" player you see in most interviews.

All the same to me.

So to sound like an educated person is a white adult perception, and to sound like a retard is acceptable?

He is lucky to be making the money he does playing a game. If he didn't have that, he would be gangbanging in the streets. He is a fuckchop.

Can you imagine him representing you in court?

IA the lawyer......defending Dale on a DUI charge..

I think all great point guards should make everyone around them better, and I don't see that out of him. I think he'd be much more valuable to a team as a 2 guard. I'll take Davis, Nash, Kidd, Paul, Arenas or Billups over him anyday. I consider him a good player too, just not the elite player he thinks he is. And, defintely not worth the headache.

Posted by: min0 lee

I thought he moved to a shooting guard?

Posted by: the nut

Yeh, they put Ollie as the starter this year... but he was running it a lot.

Funny how you can judge him jsut because of the way he speaks as a gangbanger w/o basketball, and speaking like a retard. Glad to see all the racial tolerance up there in the 51st state.

He sounded intelligent to me, slang and an urban accent don't affect my perception of someone else's intelligence. From all the pre/post game interviews and press conf I've seen him in, I know he's an intelligent and educated man, even though he may not want to speak like you want him to.

Yea, he's a 2 that still has one hand on the reigns. I agree that great PG's amke their team better, but there's only so much he can do. Remember the finals run a few years back? Who was there second leading scorer, w/o googling it? He was the team b/c everyone else was a true scrub. He had no Pippen, no Shaq, no Ric Hamilton.

Iverson: I study all these years at Georgetown University and we in here talkin' bout a drink. I drink. Man, that is funny......we ain't talkin' bout the case....we talkin' bout a drink...not the case....not the case....i go out there and practice law everyday....you see me practice law don't you?.....but we in here talkin' bout a drink.

Reporter: Don't you think you could make a better life for your family if you didn't drink?

Iverson: Man, how the hell can I make a better life for my family by me not drinkin'?

Please don't give me that shit about racial intolerance. Because he is a black man all of the sudden it is racial intolerance.... Yeah that is it.

Lets look at his past. Hmmm he grew up in the slums. Skipped school regularly, was lucky that he had people who cared about him enough to bring him back. Was convicted for "maiming by mob" sentenced for 15 years, only later to be given a pardon.

pulled over for speeding found with a concealed weapon and possesion of marijauna.

After throwing his wife out of the house, went on a rampage trying to find her at her cousins place with threats of physical violence/death.

Quote:
During the latter part of the 03-04 season, Iverson bristled under the disciplinarian approach of the Sixers' new head coach Chris Ford This led to a number of contentious incidents, including Iverson being suspended for missing practice, fined for failing to notify Ford that Iverson would not attend a game because he was sick, and refusing to play in game because he felt "insulted" that Ford wanted Iverson to come off the bench as he worked his way back from an injury.

On Feb 24, 2004 Iverson, a noted regular casino patron, was spotted at Bally's park place in Atlantic City urinating in a trash can in full view of staff and patrons. He was told by casino management not to return.

When the 2004 United States Olympic team gathered in Jacksonville, Florida for its first exhibition game, Allen Iverson was late. He was suspended for the game
Quote:
On April 18,2006 Iverson and Chris Webber arrived late to the Sixers' fan appreciation night and home game finale. Players are expected to report 90 minutes before gametime, but both Iverson and Webber arrived around tipoff. Exasperated coach Maurice Cheeks notified the media that neither would be playing and general manager Billy King announced that Iverson and Webber would be fined. During the 2006 off-season, trade rumors had Iverson going to Denver, Atlanta, or Boston. None of the deals was completed. Iverson had made it clear that he would like to stay a Sixer.
On November 29, 2006 following a conflict at practice, Iverson stormed out of the gymnasium. That same evening, Iverson missed a corporate sponsor night at Lucky Strike Lanes in Philadelphia. All the 76ers besides Iverson attended this mandatory event. Iverson was fined an undisclosed amount by the 76ers. Iverson claimed he overslept after taking medication for pain related to having two abscessed teeth pulled but it was reported that Iverson told teammates earlier in the day he planned to blow off the event and was simply going to take the fine.
Yeah he sounds like a real champ. Again if basketball wasn't there, he was going nowhere quick. No doubt he is talented, he just needs to get his head out of his ass, and remember where the real world is.

Posted by: goandykid

Funny how everyone who has met him in real life swears by him as a man amongst boys, and how everyone who watches ESPN thinks he's a dick.

Granted, he's in the spotlight, but if you want to flame anyone who's ever been arrested or urinated outside, you must be joking.

Also, we were talking about the way he speaks. I understand the point you're making, but the way he speaks should still cause no judgement. He is obviously an intelligent man; he may have made some bad decisions when he was younger but who doesn't?

Posted by: IainDaniel

Please explain to me how he is "obviously" an intelligent man?

He is making poor decisions still as of this year. Just his talent more then make up for his stupidity.

Posted by: IainDaniel

And just so you know don't throw that racial bull shit my way. I am more tolerant the probably 90% of the world. Sure we all have our prejudices. But this example here has nothing to do with anything racial motivated. So chose wisely where you want to start sling that mud.

Posted by: goandykid

What poor decisions has he made this year?

I said he was intelligent b/c of the exact same reason you doubt that he is...because of the way he speaks. He surprisingly did decent at Georgetown, and knows the game of basketball better than 95% of the other players in the NBA. I doubt many owners would want him as a coach b/c of the same things you brought up, but I think he'd be good at it.

Calm down, this isn't 1812. I believe you when you said you aren't racist, but calling a black person a gangbanger b/c of the way he speaks doesnt exactly scream tolerance.

Posted by: IainDaniel

Basketball is his life, he is gifted at that, I will give him that.

What was decent at Georgetown? What were his courses?

Poor decisions this year read my tirade above

If it was a white person I would give the same speel. you are the one judging my opinion by colour. And it wasn't only because of his speech, look at his roots, if basketball didn't get him out of that shit hole, he probably would have been in that situation for life.

All I see in this second one was an unverified report from God knows where that he planned to miss a sponsor event, even though he was loaded up on painkillers. The first one I thought was a 2004 one as well, apologies.

I don't think it matters as long it's where they come from. It's not like some inner-city kid magically starts to talk like you or me when he goes to college or leaves the "hood". Calling someone ignorant and a gangbanger b/c of the way he speaks is ignorant itself, but I believe you when you say it wasnt a racially motivated comment.

"The announced reason was "after-effects of dental surgery." One of the aforementioned agents contends Iverson told teammates earlier in the day he planned to blow off the event and was simply going to take the fine. For whatever it's worth, Iverson apologized to everyone he stiffed."

Is this what you were pointing out? I'm not going to take an anonymous agent's word for it.

Take it for whatever you want. Given Iverson's past, I tend not to side with him.

Posted by: goandykid

Understandably. You make great points, but I'm jsut trying to say that next time you see any person speak like Iverson, you won't pass immediate judgement of them being ignorant or gang affiliated or something.

I can't promise that.

You think they just pop out speaking like that? They make a choice. They choose to sound like uneducated fools, even though they may or may not be. Just like someone dressed in rags would be perceived a certain way.

I understand, but maybe it's because I've been around it. A lot of kids I know who speak like that have been through one or more GT or AP programs.

Also, choosing not to speak like that and choosing to speak proper english is ridiculous. This language is constantly evolving from new slang, people 50 or 100 years ago would probably pass the same judgement on you. Also, that's how his environment growing up sounded. It's just an accent, a culturized form of perfect English.

Either way lets see how well they try to do in a business world speaking "slang" certainly not perfect English.
