Knicks-Nuggets Brawl

Just saw this on ESPN. Marty Collins flagrantly fouled Denver's JR Smith hard with 1:19 left. The two jaw until New York's 5'4" Nate Robinson steps in and escalates the situation by throwing his arms at JR Smith. Carmelo comes over and pushes Nate Robinson and then Smith goes after Robinson and they both go flying into the camera guys and crowd. Then Carmelo comes out of nowhere and sucker punches Collins and puts him on his ass. Anyone else catch this?

Posted by: goandykid

I saw it right after it happened. Not a very entertaining "brawl". One badly thrown punch and lots of jawing, very slow.

I was watching the Brawl at the Palace as it happened, that was a moment I'll never forget.

Posted by: Goodfella9783

Yeah that was good one. Not everyday you see two fans get punched by players on the floor

Posted by: the nut

Maybe they'll suspend every Knick and we can get replacement players and win a game.

Posted by: IainDaniel

HAHAHA Carmello Anthony, what a fucking pussy. Throws a sucker punch then runs.

Posted by: P-funk

any one got a video clip? youtube?

Posted by: IainDaniel

Go to espn.com

click on the link fight night.

I swear it almost looks like a slap and not even a punch what a fucking pussy.

Posted by: Double D

Hey I watched Anthony hit him and immediatly though, wtf he hits like a girl.

Posted by: P-funk

what a bunch of idiots.

Posted by: largepkg

Carmelo went to the top of the douche bag list after that weak shit.

I see at least a 10 game vacation for him.

Posted by: Double D

I would set a presisdence and give anyone who would start a fist fight in an nba game, beings the fans are so close and could actually take part in these brawls at a minumum 25-30 game suspension. I know its harsh, but these guys need to show a little bit of discipline! Thats just ridiculous.

F that. JR Smith is his best friend supposedly. He got retribution by bitch slapping Collins who committed the flagrant foul and then left. No need to fight the whole team after that. I think the real asshole was Nate Robinson. Nothin would have happened most likely until he ran in and started pushing everyone.

Posted by: Double D

Ya but if he is going to hit him, then fuckin hit em. Dont hit him like a woman. My 3 year old daughter couldve taken that one and laughed. SAD!

KnicksNBA reviewing Knicks-Nuggets brawl
BY ALAN HAHN
Newsday Staff Writer

December 17, 2006, 10:33 PM EST

The fallout from Saturday night's brawl between the Knicks and Denver Nuggets at Madison Square Garden likely will be revealed today, when the NBA is expected to hand down suspensions to the players involved. Stu Jackson, the NBA's executive vice president of basketball operations, spent Sunday reviewing video of the fight and interviewing the key figures involved.

With the image-conscious league extremely sensitive to how this incident is bringing back memories of the ugly brawl that involved fans at The Palace of Auburn Hills on Nov. 19, 2004, it is expected that Jackson will dole out some heavy punishment.

"We will review the incident in its entirety," NBA spokesman Tim Frank said. "Until then, it would not be appropriate to comment. We do not have a timetable on when the decision will be reached."

The Knicks (9-17) host the Utah Jazz tonight at Madison Square Garden. They did not practice Sunday and neither coach Isiah Thomas nor any of the players were made available to the media.

The most prominent player involved in the brawl was Nuggets forward Carmelo Anthony, the NBA's leading scorer and one of the game's top young stars, who sucker-punched Knicks rookie Mardy Collins during the fracas. Anthony issued a statement last night apologizing for his actions in the fight.

"In the heat of the moment, I let my emotions get the best of me," he said in the statement. "My actions were inexcusable and I am sorry for making this an even more embarrassing situation."

The statement also said, "This is not the example I want to set. It's my hope that we work to move forward from this event and never let something like this happen again."

Collins, who started the incident with his flagrant foul on Nuggets guard J.R. Smith, and Nate Robinson, who played an instigator role in the brawl, are expected to be disciplined by the league. But the most prominent member of the Knicks under scrutiny is Thomas. He may not have been involved in the fracas, which took place with 1:15 left in Denver's 123-100 win, but his actions before the fight raised serious questions.

Thomas asked Anthony why he still was in the game with the Nuggets ahead by 17 with 1:32 left. According to a report in the Denver Post, a Nuggets source said Anthony told Thomas, "We need this one." Denver (13-9) had lost consecutive games entering the Knicks game.

On video replay, Thomas can be seen warning Anthony, "Don't go to the hole."

It suggests that Thomas had premeditated a hard foul, but it does need to be pointed out that it wasn't as if he had his heavy hitters -- such as Kelvin Cato or Jerome James -- on the court. Collins, who was charged with a flagrant foul on Maceo Baston in Friday's loss in Indiana, was the only true bench player in the game.

But in his postgame address, Thomas continually deflected the blame onto Nuggets coach George Karl, who had five players on the floor -- Anthony, Smith, Marcus Camby, Andre Miller and Eduardo Najera -- who have started the most games for the Nuggets this season. Karl inserted Najera for backup guard Earl Boykins with 2:52 left.

"We had surrendered," Thomas said. "Those guys shouldn't have been in the game at that point in time."

Though he did have reserves Yakhouba Diawara, Reggie Evans and Linas Kleiza at the scorer's table just before the fight took place, there's little doubt that Karl, a Larry Brown loyalist, wanted to ensure that the Nuggets won big on the Garden floor. Was he trying to show up Thomas?

It was Karl last summer who criticized the Knicks for how the Brown situation was so bizarrely handled. "A good organization helps their coach through it instead of taking a confrontational position," Karl said during the Orlando pre-draft camp in June.

Thomas then confronted Karl at the Las Vegas summer league in July. "I just made the point that he should talk about his own team and quit talking about ours," Thomas said in early November. "I don't talk about the Denver Nuggets and he shouldn't talk about the New York Knicks."

A little over a month later, Tho.mas was talking about the Denver Nuggets. And it's not the first time this season that he has gone against his own advice.

After Steve Francis suffered an ankle sprain when he took a jump shot and landed on the foot of the Spurs' Bruce Bowen, who had extended his foot under Francis, Thomas was asked what he would do if a player did that to him. "I'd beat the -- -- out of somebody," Thomas said Nov. 10.

The next night, the Knicks played the Spurs in San Antonio, and when Bowen got his foot under Jamal Crawford during a jump shot, Thomas started screaming, "Next time he does that, break his -- -- foot!"

Thomas then got into a verbal altercation with Bowen, and Spurs coach Gregg Popovich -- another good friend of Brown's, by the way -- charged to midcourt, yelling at Thomas, "Don't talk to my players!"

I heard the same thing in the other papers here in NY.

Posted by: min0 lee

That's one thing about I. Thomas, he is a tough one.
He was a very good player but he sucks as a GM bigtime.

Posted by: Dale Mabry

That's great that the knicks stop playing if they are down by 17 with 1:32 left. If they are down at the half, they should just not bother coming out and go to the bar.

Yep and that is good, everything was starting to get sorted out before he acted like the bitch he is. Shit watch it closely it isn't even a punch it is a slap... what a fag.

Posted by: min0 lee

To be bitch slapped instead of a punch is an insult around here, the saying goes you punch a man you slap a woman.

So they say.

On you tube they rag him for running away. HAHA.

Youtube sure has a way of highlighting the stupid thing celebrities do.

They need to be suspended for the remainder of the season.

Posted by: Goodfella9783

No way. Definately not equal to Artest going into the stands and beating up fans. I was happy when Melo slapped Collins. Isiah should be partly held responsible yet he's serving no games. They showed him say clear as day "Don't go to the basket right now. It wouldn't be a good idea" to Nugget players. They showed this on Sportscenter. Collins committed a "Sucker" attack on JR Smith from behind so Melo returned the favor. Melo's hit was actually less "sucker" because he was jawing with Collins/Jefferies back and forth until he finally hit him. Collins ripped down Smith from behind which could have caused just as much damage if not more than Melo's slap. Collins got his "just dessert" IMO. And about the running away: Any smart person would back up after hitting someone with the whole opposing team rushing them. Not like he turned around and sprinted. He back peddaled in a fighting stance ready to go at it again.

So let me get this straight, you think slapping someone and running away like a bitch is acceptable? Pussy ass move in my book, period!

I don't think so?

Laimbier was one tough MOFO. he scared the shit out of me when he played with that face mask when his nose was broken. Now he coaches in the WNBA.

Posted by: the nut

As a Knick fan I was thrilled to hear the whole surrender quote! If they are gonna surrender, how about surrendering a couple seasons, and not worrying about selling out the Garden every game. It's always about signing free agents that will put asses in the seats with the Knicks. It's time the signed some young quality talent, not high priced, past their prime cry babies. How about some damn chemistry for once. All I did was cry that the early to mid 90's that they couldn't beat the Bulls, or the Rockets, or the Spurs. Jesus, what I would do to have that team back. Not the most talented bunch of guys, but they always put up a fight. And you would have never heard Riley or Van Gundy say they had surrendered, no matter what the situation was. I beginning to think this organization is never gonna win with Dolan and Thomas running the show.

Posted by: min0 lee

Ha! Coach Karl calls Thomas a jackass!

It's sad when this is the highlight of the season.....sucks to be a Knick fan.

Not from a fighting standpoint. I was just happy that Collins got somethin. I thought that foul was bullshit. And it was a direct order from Isiah. So seeing one of Isiah's players pull that cheap shot and getting it in return was fine with me. But I guess you could say he did stick and move . And he didn't run. Running is if he turned around and ran. He back pedaled seeing Jefferies, Robinson and Collins all rush him. But you could see he was ready to defend himself. Nate Robinson (the overall instigator) ran right up to Carmelo after the punch and everything and stopped in his tracks real quick like a deer in headlights once he saw that another altercation was about to take place. That's backing down. At least Carmelo threw down and got revenge for the hit on JR Smith.

Posted by: min0 lee

I know this is off topic but look at that fake flop. Pathetic.

Posted by: the nut

Carmelo did nothing but embarass himself with that punch. When I was in high school, that was how all the sisters punched, so gay.

Suspensions handed down in Knicks-Nuggets brawl

BY ALAN HAHN
Newsday Staff Writer

December 18, 2006, 2:22 PM EST

The NBA suspended seven players involved in Saturday's brawl at Madison Square Garden in the final minutes of the Knicks' 123-100 loss to the Denver Nuggets.

Carmelo Anthony, who connected on a punch to Knicks' rookie Mardy Collins, was given a 15-game suspension, the most against any player involved. Knicks guard Nate Robinson was given a 10-game suspension. Nuggets guard J.R. Smith, who wrestled with Robinson in the front row, also received a 10-game suspension.

Collins, who sparked the fight with a flagrant foul on Smith with 1:15 left in the game, was given a six-game suspension, and Knicks forward Jared Jeffries, who had been playing peacemaker until Anthony hit Collins, was given a four-game suspension.

The two other Knicks on the court at the time, David Lee and Channing Frye, were ejected from the game but did not face any further punishment by the NBA. But Knicks center Jerome James and Nuggets center Nene were each given an automatic one-game suspension for leaving their respective bench areas during an altercation.

The Knicks (9-17) play Monday night against the Utah Jazz at the Garden. They will have just eight players available for the game, unless Steve Francis can play through knee tendinitis that has kept him out of action over the past five games.

The teams were each fined $500,000, but NBA commissioner David Stern did not hand down any punishment against Knicks coach Isiah Thomas, who was caught on video warning Anthony, "Don't go to the basket right now" before the fight broke out. A few seconds before Collins took Smith down hard on a fast-break layup attempt.

"There was not adequate evidence," Stern said of Thomas' involvement. "Even in the NBA, there's a presumption of innocence."

After the Knicks morning shoot-around, Thomas said he wasn't warning Anthony, but merely making a point that he felt it wasn't right for the Nuggets star -- among four other Nuggets starters -- to be in the game at that point. The Nuggets were ahead by 19 points with 90 seconds left in the game and Thomas felt Nuggets coach George Karl was trying to show-up the Knicks on their home court.

"I said to those guys, 'This isn't the way you should act,'" Thomas said. "'This isn't the way you should be. You shouldn't be rubbing it in.' But it wasn't a threat. It was, more or less, 'This isn't how you do it.'"

Thomas also said Karl, "put his players in a tough position. I think he put his players in a very bad position."

Thomas and Karl have been in a public feud since last summer, when Karl, a close friend of former Knicks coach Larry Brown, criticized the Knicks for how they handled Brown during his controversial-filled 23-win season in 2005-06.

During his media address on Monday in Denver, Karl was angry that the NBA did not hand down any punishment against Thomas and, according to a Denver reporter, called Thomas "a jackass."

Anthony issued an apology on Sunday night. Robinson on Monday morning also apologized for his actions in the fight and said, "I'm very sad. I don't want to send the wrong message to kids saying it's cool to fight and go out there and do those kinds of things."

Collins said Thomas never instructed him to foul anyone hard.

"I definitely wasn't told to commit a hard foul," Collins said. "I just didn't want the guy to do a dunk. I could have easily hit the guy when he went in the air and that would have been a worse foul. I just tried to stop the guy before he went into the air."

"Here is what I am burning on. Carmelo Anthony will appeal his 15 day suspension saying "I have never had to sit out a month before in my life."....yea, and you also never sucker punched someone at the end of a fight and then did a reverse Ben Johnson."

hahahahaha....that last sentence is classic....he pulled Ben Johnson on him! haha
