In Denver, it's the A.I. show

For three seasons and right up until he threw a punch and then ran away scared down the Garden floor, Carmelo Anthony had been the face of the Denver Nuggets. He wasn't as big in Denver as John Elway, because no one can ever be. But the Nuggets were Anthony's team.
Then that all changed when Anthony began his 15-game suspension and the Nuggets made their play for Allen Iverson.
Denver is Iverson's team now, and if you don't believe that, you probably also think the Answer didn't ask out of Philly. He's not the first superstar to force his way out of town and he won't be the last.
The Sixers didn't get enough for Iverson, but very few teams do when they go public with their intentions to move a radioactive superstar. It worked the same way in Indiana with Ron Artest, who will never be Iverson on the court, but who is getting to be as much trouble in Sacramento as he ever was for Larry Bird and Rick Carlisle in Indiana.
Artest has found that the Kings aren't his team, not as long as Mike Bibby is controlling the offense. So now, a month shy of his one-year anniversary in Sacramento, Artest has come down with a mysterious knee problem, which follows a mysterious back problem that forced him to sit out four games earlier this season.
The difference between Iverson and Artest, of course, is that while they both arrived in their new cities toting more baggage than just about anyone else in the sport, Iverson is a genuine superstar, with all the trappings.
Iverson might have been in the mood to defer during summer months when he played for the U.S. Olympic team. But during the only season that really counts for guys such as A.I., he requires the ball to be in his hands only. He had that power for parts of 11 seasons in Philly and he's not going to give it up in Denver to some kid who hasn't even gotten out of the first round of the playoffs.
"He said, 'We're going to make it work,' " Anthony told the Denver media of his initial call to Iverson after the trade went down. "People are saying that we can't play together. He was saying he's tired of doing everything himself."
But when Iverson had his greatest success as a pro, he was the only superstar on his team. There wasn't anyone who even remotely resembled a second star on the 2001 Sixers team that went to the Finals. The second star was the coach, Larry Brown.
It was Iverson, at his MVP best, and a supporting cast of old-school pros, "big character guys," as Brown used to call them, who were assembled to keep Iverson in line. Now, with his new team, Iverson isn't taking a back seat to anyone, even if it's a rising star whom the league foolishly tries to put on equal footing with Dwyane Wade and LeBron James. "Most people have not enjoyed playing with Iverson, and that goes back to his Georgetown days," said one Western Conference GM. "So you're asking a guy who has played one way as a pro, and alienated a lot of teammates, to make a radical change in his approach. Initially, you might see that. But over the long haul, he's still going to be Allen Iverson." The new face of the Denver Nuggets

Any team AI would go to would be HIS team. Carmelo hasnt even proved anything yet. AI has proved himself time and time again.

Posted by: bio-chem

whoever wrote that is the dumbest person alive. it has to be that dumbass woody that used to be on cold pizza, or some other fool with a misunderstanding about how unimportant his own opinions really are.

"even if it's a rising star whom the league foolishly tries to put on equal footing with Dwyane Wade and LeBron James".

isnt carmello the league scoring leader until his suspension? that draft was an amazing draft and all three of those guys will be mainstays in this league for a long time to come. the guy actually finds away to compliment and insult anthony in the same sentence.

Not foolish at all to compare Melo to Lebron and Wade. Melo is a better scorer than both, can post up the best and biggest defenders in the league, is a great shooter, bangs the boards as well as if not better than LeBron, his team has just as good a record (while being in the more difficult Western Conference) as the Heat and Cavs, is a clutch shooter who has hit many more game winners than LeBron and Wade, led his team to an NCAA championship in 2003. I think the only edge Wade and LeBron have on Melo is that they are less selfish with the ball. I don't agree this is AI's team now. Carmelo Anthony was there first, has a much longer and brighter future than a veteran Iverson, and who even knows if AI will stay more than one or two seasons in Denver?

That being said, I'm about to see what my C's can do against the Nuggets right now.

My Wizards are up 30 on memphis right now, 77 first half points.

I think AI will be a humbled leader in Denver.

Did you see Arenas' performance against Phoenix Friday? He made some unbelivable plays on the offensive end. Especially that teardrop 3 point play towards the end of regulation to tie and send the game to OT. Even though he had 0 assists lol.

Posted by: goandykid

Ofcourse I watched it. Arenas put up 54 on Phoenix and 60 against Kobe in the same week.

Did you hear Kobe's diss on Arenas after Arenas took a shit on him, then Arenas' comeback? Kobe is a douche bag.

Posted by: tucker01

It isn't really a comeback he is just telling the truth. Kobe is a douche bag.

No didn't catch that. What did he say?

Posted by: goandykid

"You tip your hat and say, 'See you next time.' First of all, he shot 27 free throws. We as a team shot 30. Think about that.

But him individually, it's funny. He doesn't seem to have much of a conscience. I really don't think he does. Some of the shots he took tonight, you miss those, and they're just terrible shots. Awful. You make them and they're unbelievable shots. I don't get a chance to play him much, so I haven't gotten used to that mentality of just chucking it up there. He made some big ones, but I'll be ready next time." -Kobe

"You know, at the end of the day, all the shots that I take I practice. It's not like I just go into the game just throwing up shots. I work hard. I'm in the gym every day. I practice my shots. Before every game I shoot 100 threes. You know, I get to the gym, I shoot 100 threes so I feel comfortable taking the shots I take.
Out of that whole game I probably took two bad shots. And, for me not to have a conscience? You're right. When you're an assassin, you don't have a conscience. At the end of the day I thought he didn't have a conscience, but I guess he does.
For the best player in the league to downplay what I did... I guess, I don't know. I give him all the respect in the world. He is the No. 1 player in the league, by far. It's like that. You don't need to try to shadow box my 60. It was one of them nights when I was clicking and everything was going in so, I ended up having 60. That's all there is to it.
How can you go back at a guy who scores 45 every night? You can't. There's no point of it. There's no point.
We know who he is.
I know who he is.
I'm a big fan, I'm one of his No. 1 fans, so there's no point in even throwing shots at him." - Gilbert

Posted by: goandykid

Classy Gilbert, have you ever seen an interview w/ him? He is hilarious, one of the few good quality people in the league.

Somethign that Gilbert didn't say was that in the games leading up to the Lakers game, Arenas had been shouting "HIBACHI!" as a joke when he shot and was on fire during games. After Kobe said that, he was shouting "QUALITY SHOT!" in the Phoenix game when he put up 54 points.

Kobe is a bitch and has no defense. Dwayne Wade had 42 on him on Christmas, Michael Redd had 40 something a few weeks ago, AND Arenas' 60.

Posted by: Goodfella9783

Well props to Arenas for being classy with his response. Kobe's comments didn't seem that harsh I guess though. I didn't see that particular game between the Lakers and Wizards so I wouldn't be able to comment on the quality of the shots.

I like to watch Arenas the same way I like to watch Kobe, which is different than the reasons I like to watch Garnett or Wade who are great all around players. Arenas is next to impossible to stop once he gets on a scoring rhythm and it's awesome to watch. I still think there's room for improvement for him before he's the total package though.

Posted by: goandykid

They weren't bad shots, it was just that Kobe's not used to being shat on. I saw all 4 quarters and OT, and there was maybe 1 or 2 bad shots, but they were forced due to time or shot clock.

Posted by: Goodfella9783

I'm watching this Nuggets/Celtics game right now and Iverson is going out of his way to get other people involved. It looks so unnatural after watching Iverson for so long I hope he doesn't stay playing like this.

Posted by: goandykid

They jsut took it off ESPN2 for some lame interview, I'm waiting for it to be put back on. Gilbert had 31 today against Memphis, we scored 45 in teh first quarter and 77 in the first half.

...God damnt, they jsut cut over to the Suns game. I hate when ESPN2 does this, they decide to show you 2 mins of every game instead of the exciting one, everyone wants to see AI at Denver in one of his first games.

Posted by: goandykid

"Arenas, who scored a franchise-record 60 points in a win over the Los Angeles Lakers Sunday before last and dropped 54 in a win over the Phoenix Suns on Friday, didn't get to 40 last night and didn't need to. Most of his work was done by the fourth quarter when Coach Eddie Jordan started mixing in reserves while resting Arenas for tonight's game at Charlotte.

The Wizards, who have won 11 of their last 14, will be gunning for their first four-game winning streak of the season tonight against the Bobcats and could overtake suddenly struggling Orlando for first place in the Southeast Division by the end of the week."

Holler atcha boy.

I was pulling for the Wiz in last season's playoffs against the Cavs.

Yeah, I like the Cavs though. Did you hear what Lebron said to Arenas when he was at the line and in the last game and it was tied or really close? I'll find and post. Classlessness by Lebron but theyre still friends.

Posted by: goandykid

"Late in overtime of game six between the Cavaliers and Wizards, Gilbert Arenas was at the free throw line waiting to attempt his second free throw after missing the first. Lebron James stepped to the free throw line, put his hand on Arenas and began to say something in a very calm manner. Arenas clanked the second free throw off back iron and the Cavaliers won the game and series off a shot by Damon Jones. What James said to Arenas is a mystery, but it obviously affected Arenas, and he walked off the court after two straight misses shaking his head. If all the big time shots these two hit throughout the series didn't spark a rivalry, then those few words by Lebron at the end of game six, definitely did. "

I heard Lebron said something along the lines of: "This is your season" or "if you miss, pack your bags." No one knows but from what I heard (through obvious bias and heresay) it was something classless and rattling.

Posted by: Goodfella9783

Yeah I do remember that. I don't really like LeBron that much. He's one of the best players in the league and still so young but he's already getting that cocky mentality you can see with his attitude on the court.

Posted by: goandykid

Yea, but LEbron, Wade, and Melo all seem to lack personality to me and are considered the top young stars. Gilbert is one of the top scorers in the league (2nd now?) and is freakin hilarious. Plus a big community figure and loves to please the fans. Home or away, he always tosses his game jersey out to the fans after a game, and bought 20k of his own jerseys this year to give out at a home game.

He's also been known to change his shoes at halftime when he is shootin bad, and once showered in his clothes at the half last year.

I wonder if he did it all non-chalantly. The rest of the team must have been like WTF?

If that's what he really said, that dosen't sound that bad to me.

It isn't that bad really. But under those circumstances and them being friends, it is kind of a dickhole thing to say, even though LeBron just did whatever he could to try and win.

Posted by: Goodfella9783

Who the hell is the white guy with the long dreads and horrible tan I always see at NBA games? You can always see him behind the Lakers and Mavericks benches. Now he just lifted Iverson up after the Nuggets beat the Celtics in Denver.

Posted by: goandykid

Trainer? No idea who youre talking about, but espn2 never went back to that goddamn game, what happened?
