College question.

Question for the educated. Or non, whoever can help me, doesn't matter.

I see alot of people selling sports medicine, advertising, developing, etc.

How does one get into this field? I'm interested. After being removed from the Navy for apparently having a back problem (which I still contest), I'm looking for a new field. I've always been a big fan of sports supplements, sports medicine, and am just looking for a certain B.A. that would target one of the two. If I wanted to market products as such, would I get more into the business side, or more along the lines of nutritional sciences?

Anyone who has thought about this before, or is actually in such a career, have any sort of guidance for me?

As always, thanks in advance.

I'm currently enrolled in a Kinesiology undergraduate program from my BS. Kinesiology is a great major IMO. It covers sports injury rehab, athletic nutrition, biomechanics, sports medicine, anatomy&physiology(skeletal, muscle). Metabolism, endocrinology...bunch of stuff. Apparently the job market is huge for things like physical therapy, sports training and personal training. Plus the field is relatively new, lots of stuff going on.

That blows about the Navy, weren't you training really hard for that?

you want to get into the marketing end?

If so, then study marketing and business.

Posted by: fufu

Lol I didn't even see he was interesting in business. Yeah what P-funk said...

Thanks for the responses..

I am somewhat interested in the marketing portion of that, but the way I see that is basically I'd get a degree for such then learn more about the product from the specific company. Fufu's opinion helped, as did yours.. =) Thanks.

Yea, I was working hard for the Navy. 9 months of training, working with a SEAL motivator, training other kids.. I was better then any of the kids going into the program. 3 weeks into boot camp they randomly X-Ray (random my ass, theycalled everyone I knew)... and decided I had a degenerative back disease. My doctor says its bullshit, I've fought it, nothing I can do. I'm classed as an RE-4, meaning nobody in any military branch will have anything to do with me.. Even though I can do well over 200 pushups, 30+ pullups, run the mile 1/2 in under 8, swim 500m using a combat side/breast stroke in under 9, and pretty much aced the ASVAB.

Fuck 'em =P

And just to put a little side note onto my accomplishments, none of that would've been done without the help/guidance from ironmagazineforums =)

Posted by: fufu

That is very strange...sounds like a bullshit excuse to get you out for some reason. Hmmm...

Those are some great accomplishments anyway.

Gonna bump this up, anyone else have any ideas?

I live in Missouri, the Kansas City area. I'm looking at schools around here, (as far as MU which is 2 hours away).. I'm definetly looking at Kinesiology (thanks Fufu).. Only problem is, no colleges offer any sort of program relating to it around here =(

Posted by: P-funk

wait, are you looking to study exercise or are you looking to just learn the business aspect and be into marketing? The latter is what I thought you wanted.

*shakes*..

I'm unsure of what I *really* want to do with it, I just know what I'm interested, and have been interested in.

Supplements, nutrition, and basically anything that has to do with anything that enters our body and alters something in one way or another.

I know I said selling supplements, that's not necessarily what I meant. (But yea, you indeed read it correctly). Honestly Im not sure what I'm after. I want to know why and how these supplements, and foods, effect us. As well as proper training/exercising, then I want to apply that to a career.

So basically, the kinesiology sounds great with all the - ports injury rehab, athletic nutrition, biomechanics, sports medicine, anatomy&physiology(skeletal, muscle). Metabolism, endocrinology- ...

Sorry, I may sound confusing, in truth I am myself confused.

=P Guidance needed.

You could become an Licensed Athletic Trainer Certified (LATC) by going to an accredited program like at NDSU North Dakota State University. I was in the program for 1.5 years and decided to go into a more hospital oriented medical field.

This might sound like a simplistic approach, but why not learn about the industry from a grass roots level. eg. Work in a reputable health food store/supplement company. That way you can quickly develop an understanding of the various products on the market, different customers types and their needs, what people buy, what marketing techniques work as well as develop some contacts in the industry.

From there you will be in a better position to determine what aspect (if any) you wish to focus on such as marketing/sales, product development etc

Posted by: P-funk

yea, ATC is a good degree. Exercise Phys. is good.

If you want to learn about supplements and nutrition and what they do, why study kineseology though? That is more biomechanics and human movement science. Why not study nutritional sciences?

Or, go to a school and study to get your BA in Health Science, with a minor in marketing or something like that.

Nutrition is great too.

MU??

fuck the supplement stores. the best thing you can do is try and find a nutritionist in the area and ask to sit with them and learn what they do (tell them you are considering a career in the field) and find out if it is something you are interested in.

I know at Colorado State has a Sports Promotion degree. Exercise science with a business degree would be good if you wanted to get into that field

Posted by: tannywild

MU = University of Missouri, Columbia.. Tigers.. Mizzou..

=) Local University.

Posted by: americanwit

Some require medical knowledge/degree, even if just interested on the business side.

College is usually overrated IMO, but good luck anyways.
