Go ahead, let's get some n00b Training Q&A since a ton of new peeps may be frequenting.

How do I get big like the pro's?

Posted by: shiznit2169

While it may seem that a lot of people ask idiotic questions, everyone has to start somewhere. Think back to the time you first started training and reading about nutrition and fitness?

As i recall, a lot of experienced members on these boards such as pfunk and cowpimp used to have absurd training routines and did "bodybuilding" style marathons.

The only thing that separates us from the noobs is that we take the time to read and learn through years of trial and error while others give up or rely on others to tell them what to do.

I don't wanna get big, I just wanna get toned. What are some exercises I can do to get toned?

Posted by: ponyboy

It's true that if I do more reps I'll burn more fat, right? So I should do 200 crunches a day for flat abs?

Posted by: Dale Mabry

This was actually supposed to be serious, for peeps to kind of introduce themselves. So, despite my distaste for rules, I have to make one...

No douchebags...Except for P-funk, he can come in.

this is a serious question...is it possible to over train your abs?

Posted by: wilwn

technically no, since overtraining is a CNS phenomenon, not a localized one.

While I can't account for technicalities, I don't feel that's an appropriate response.

Overtraining, to me, is when there is not enough recovery between workouts. You can definitely overtrain a muscle group and inhibit growth and progress.

so if i do crunches everyday i'm making them shrink not grow?

Posted by: Doublebase

Should you do direct arm work if you are doing compound lifts such as BP, DL and Squat?

Is Gatorade good for you?

They're not necessarily shrinking (a process called atrophy as opposed to hypertrophy), but without enough rest they probably aren't growing as much as they potentially could. You'd have to post your routine here to see whether you're overtraining, really.

Your arms won't grow as much as they could without any work on them. For example, doing only benches, deadlifts and squats will cause only minimal growth in the arms as the body tries to maintain some kind of balance. However, direct arm work isn't necessary. Compound work that also hits the arms is great (pull ups, chin ups, rows, benches, etc).

well i my coach created a routine for me for football and i have to do crunches everyday...4 sets of 10-12...i wanted to no if this was enough or if i could do more

The only problem with this thread is that if someone asks a question they could potentially get four different answers because several of us experienced guys have different philosophies about training. Although I guess that's not a bad thing.

And if you're going to do crunches every day PLEASE add some erector/extensor chain work in to balance yourself out before you ruin your back before you're 25. Amazing to me that coaches don't know this basic stuff.

that's okay. people take what they want to take from one philosophy and leave what they don't want to take. Isn't that how you develop your training philosophie? It is taken from reading many different things and taking what you thought useful from them and leaving the rest. After several years, you came to conclusions which you preceive to be true and which garuntee you a certain amount of success with clients.
