I don't think Peyton Manning, Tom Brady or anyone could have done anthing with Florida last night...the boys up front got beat down bad by Florida's D-line.

Posted by: IainDaniel

Yeah but Troy Smith already has some knocks against him...Size, throwing.

So in the game of games, gotta open some eyes.

Troy Smith was not a top ten pick on anyones board.... he was always late 1st round at best.

I wonder how high Teddy Ginn will go.

If he had shown up last night, he would have moved up easily. Mario Williams wasn't #1 last year, yet we know what happened there....

I disagree, they were a heavy favorite in that game so it was expected they would beat Florida.

He's clearly behind Russell, Quinn and Brohm as far as NFL tools and size. And a lot of scouts have Stanton and Edwards in front of him as well. Brohm is likely to leave now that Petrino left Louisville... most likely pushes Smith back to a 2nd to 3rd rounder. You may see 4 Qbs taken first round, tops. And don't put it past Al Davis to make a boneheaded move pass on Russell and Quinn to get Calvin Johnson like Pepper said.

Agreed! Even with a solid game last night he wouldn't have moved up. Just look at the teams in the middle to end of the first round. How many are in need of an average QB?

Posted by: the nut

This draft is actually deep with QBs that could turn out to decent NFL careers.... I happen to think if Davis is smart, they'll take Adrian Peterson at #1 and take the best QB left on the board at their second pick, probably Smith, Stanton, Edwards, or Kolb (granted they would have to be groomed).

yea, Peterson is awesome. I think he may have be able to snag the Heisman had he not gotten injured.

He's been a stud from the second he stepped on the field as a true freshman, and worked his ass off to get back for that bowl game.

KFOR is reporting Adrian Peterson will announce he is entering the NFL draft on Wednesday

how many teams think they need a high draft pick qb? 3 tops. there are a ton of teams out there with young qb's poised to be the next big thing. at least they hope so. im betting qb's fall farther than they did last year.

denver drafts a running back and reciever with their first 2 picks.

Why do people say Quinn is "at his best" under pressure. He sucks fucking balls! He came back against Army and Navy....Big fucking deal! They shouldn't have had to come back against those teams anyway.

I think that Brady Quinn will be in good Company with Rick Mirer as a great ND QB flop in the NFL.

They be looking for a playmeaker... they will probably end up with Bush, Irons, Samardzija, or Bowe.

I hope we take a solid CB to compliment Bailey, Darrant Williams was the crutch of their defense last year.

It also time to think some replacements at offensive line.

That's incorrect, they destoryed Army and a decent Navy team this year. Comebacks were aginst Michigan State, UCLA, and Georgia Tech.

I'm still waiting for somebody to name, one QB that could have led ND to win in those 3 games. NOT HAPPENING! Troy Smith found out what it's like to face the pressure that Quinn faced in almost every game. How did the Heisman Trophy winner do under constant pressure.... ENOUGH SAID!

Will be on most lists, but it's a huge mistake to take a receiver at #1.

Posted by: the nut

Funny that the Raider's passed on Leinart and Cutler last year. Now they are in a position where had they taken one of them, they could pick up Peterson at #1 and a solid starting receiver at #33.

Skins will take Alan Branch. Any wolverine draft pick is fine by me. If Branch somehow goes early, I wouldnt be surprised if we grabbed Gaines Adam's or Leon Hall. Maybe even a linebacker. Prescott Burgess in the 2nd

Gaines is a stud. Did you know he played 8-man football in High School and no one recruited him. Now he is an early first round pick.

I doubt Samardzija will make an impact in the NFL. Good guy though, hope he does.

YYea he is, but Andre Carter finally remembered how to play DE at the end of the NFL season. I think he closed out w/ 3 or 4 sacks in the last 2-3 games, and was shutting down hsi side. We desperately need some penetration in the middle. Thats what she said.

I would take Jarrett and Johnson ahead of him, but he's definitely got the skills. Size, speed, strength, and hands... What do you think would be his downfall?

in the same draft as williams denver drafted 2 other cornerbacks, both have been improving. williams did have 4 picks this year didnt he? besides when your opposite champ bailey (who picks off anything thrown in his half of the field) your going to be picked on quite a bit, and look like a crutch. id like to see the safety position addressed. lynch is a stud at run support yet in coverage he is not where he used to be. denver usually spends a lot of second day picks on linemen and chooses to develop them. look at tom nalen, he was a 7th round pick. although george foster needs to pick up his play (was a 1st rounder a few years ago i think) are there any more clevland browns we could steal?

I truly believe that his performance in the Indianapolis game sent the Broncos into a downward spiral... the whole team stepped up that game, including offense and when Manning needed a big play he went to the only spot he had open, Reggie Wayne (10 catches, 138yds, 3tds). Then the fumble on the punt return vs San Diego. I was done with that dude from that moment on. No disrespect to him.

Paymah and Foxworth

Paymah plays a little on special teams, Foxworth started some games last year, and got a lot of run this year, but he's not that great.

raiders need a QB badly. If Al Davis has half a brain, he will take Brady Quinn or the equivalent.

it will be interesting to see what direction denver goes with the cornerback position. how high a draft pick do you think they will use on the position?

If Revis, Cason, McCauley, or Hall are still on the board, it may be worth a 1st rounder.

Or Free Agency....

Nate Clements, UFA, Buffalo Bills
Asante Samuel UFA New England Patriots
Roc Alexander, RFA, Denver Broncos
Jordan Babineaux, RFA, Seattle Seahawks
Jason David, RFA, Indianapolis Colts
Randall Gay, RFA, New England Patriots
Nick Harper, UFA, Indianapolis Colts
David Macklin, UFA, Arizona Cardinals

Can't beat a double, not very explosive. Not super fast off the ball, but his great hands usually make up for it. Besides, Jurevicious already has that white receiver title.

Posted by: goandykid

Asante Samuel will get some major dough, I doubt from the Patriots though. Tehy wouldnt splurge for Branch, they wont open up their wallet for Samuels. IMHO.

I would agree with that. He would be a posession receiver in the NFL. He's ability to go up and get the ball made him most dangerous in the red zone, almost unstopable in college. He also broke a lot of short passes into long gains because of agility and toughness, but I think that will be limited in the NFL. Plus, he wants to play both baseball and football, so that might hurt him in the draft. The Cubs have offered him 5 million +.

Posted by: lsuguy13

I think the Raiders take JaMarcus Russel with the first pcik. Al Davis loves QB's that can throw the deep ball and Russel can throw the ball 40 yards on his ass. 60 on one knee. And throw 90 stepping into the throw.

Yea he is tough. Looks like a girl though. His toughness in college wont last in the NFL tho, he's too small. Let him run one across the middle against the RAvens or Bears, or have Sean Taylor come across the cover 2 to nail him deep.

Forget football, he needs to stay with baseball, he'll get paid more and last alot longer.

Posted by: goandykid

Yea, but wouldnt you rather play football? Kind of like Ted Ginn Jr. Future career or not, if I had the opportunity to go back out there during the national championship, I wouldve in a second. I'm pretty sure most people would agree w/ me.

He was walking post game.

I believe it's 80-85 yards consistantly. A lot of QBs range goes down in the NFL because the bigger ball, but he has big hands, or at least his girlfriend said so.

IMO, The Raiders have to make a choice between Russell, Quinn, and Peterson, with Russell being the front runner right now. Taking Calvin Johnson, who's gonna be a stud, is not the right move.

I like football alot more then baseball but the kind of money and length of career would keep me in baseball, plus I believe more people think he is better in baseball

Posted by: goandykid

Really? I would play football, even if it cost me 5-7 years off my playing career. I guess everyone has their own passions and gets off to diff sports. Mine is definitely football or basketball. I would love to be an NBA coach. Or a player, but I love coaching

I never seen him alligator-arm a ball once in college, and he went over the middle a lot. He takes huge shots and gets right up, ie USC and LSU. I have no reason to believe that would change in the NFL. 6'5 220 is not exactly small for an NFL receiver. I'm sure he will gain some pounds once he is in the NFL, as most players do. I think his for going up and getting the ball in the end zone

Or he could go to baseball, get juiced up, than come back to the NFL.

I was surprised to see Brian Brohm stayed, with the coaching change. Good for him.

I actually spent a lot of time with Colt Brennan at Walter Camp this weekend, and he said he had no idea what he was gonna do (they had to declare by this morning, but he gets 72 hours to change his mind). He said the NFL would have been an easy choice if he didn't play in Hawaii. What an awesome guy. Talked to anyone who came up to him, hope he does well in the N.

Cubs, Samardzija agree to $10 million, 5-year deal
Jan. 19, 2007
CBS SportsLine.com wire reports

CHICAGO -- Jeff Samardzija decided to give up football and stay with baseball.

The former Notre Dame receiver, projected as a first-round pick in the NFL draft this April, agreed Friday to a $10 million, five-year contract to pitch for the Chicago Cubs.

"Baseball is my first love. I played it my whole life," Samardzija said.

Samardzija, 21 year-old right-hander, was the Cubs' fifth-round pick in last year's amateur draft and made seven starts for their Class A teams at Boise and Peoria last summer, posting a 2.70 ERA.

He returned to Notre Dame and helped the Irish make the Sugar Bowl, catching 78 passes for 1,017 yards. He also played baseball during his career at Notre Dame

His deal includes a $2.5 million signing bonus and the Cubs hold options for a sixth and seventh seasons in 2012 and 2013. If the options are exercised, the deal would be worth $16.5 million over seven years.

Samardzija said there would be no returning to football, even though he's headed for a stint in the minor leagues, probably starting at Class A Daytona after spring training. The deal also includes a no-trade clause.

"He has offered at any time in the five-year period to give the (signing bonus) money back. He wanted to make everything clear that there wasn't any turning back," Cubs general manager Jim Hendry said.

Samardzija's fastball was clocked at 97 mph last summer and Hendry said the Cubs project him one day to a be "high end starter."

Samardzija, 21-6 in 50 college baseball games, said he spent 10 to 12 hours a day studying weighing the decision on which sport to pursue.

He said Irish coach Charlie Weis was supportive when he told him he was turning to baseball.

"He was excited. he wished me the best and he asked for Cubs tickets," Samardzija said.

The skins are either going to draft ALan Branch (hopefully, go blue, and we need a DT the msot) or Gaines Adams, depending on who the Cardinals draft. Whichever one they dont take, we take.

Also, expect us to buy one or multiple of the following: Dre Bly, Fred SMOOOOOT, Nate Clements, or the LB London Fletcher.

Uncertainty clouds Quinn's draft status

By Vic Carucci
National Editor, NFL.com

INDIANAPOLIS (Feb. 24, 2007) -- Brady Quinn might not want to acknowledge as much publicly, but he has much more to prove than any player at the NFL Scouting Combine.

Quinn once found himself as the likely top pick of April's draft. He now finds himself surrounded by uncertainty over just how high -- or low -- he will be selected in the first round.

Quinn will tell you that he doesn't read what anyone has to write or listen to what anyone has to say about his draft stock. He also will tell you that he doesn't quite understand why anyone would write or say that he has lost ground since the fall, when he began his senior season at Notre Dame as the presumptive No. 1 overall choice.

"For those people who have said that and what's been echoed to me, it's kind of hard for a guy to slip when we haven't done anything," Quinn said. "I didn't play a game for the past couple of months. It's funny to kind of sit back and hear some of that and you're thinking, 'Man, did I not like lift today? Did somebody see me in the weight room miss a rep?'

"I'm kind of confused."

He actually shouldn't be.

There are fairly solid reasons why Quinn no longer looks as if he will be the top pick and, in fact, could slip toward the bottom of the top 10 ... if not much lower.

One is JaMarcus Russell. Russell is the quarterback who played far better than Quinn in leading LSU to a resounding triumph over Notre Dame in the Sugar Bowl. Russell is bigger, stronger and has one of the most powerful throwing arms that NFL coaches and player-personnel evaluators have ever seen. By all early indications, the Oakland Raiders are planning to draft him with the No. 1 choice.

Another reason Quinn appears to have slipped is that he did not play particularly well in the Fighting Irish's biggest games. He never led Notre Dame to a bowl victory.

Still another negative for Quinn is that he is not especially accurate on his throws beyond 20 yards. His longer passes don't consistently have much zip and too often miss their mark. On the other hand, Russell's deep ball travels like a laser and usually winds up in the right place.

Where will Quinn land in the draft? No one seems to have the slightest clue at this stage.

It doesn't seem as if the Detroit Lions, who own the second pick, want him, even though they have reasons to be dissatisfied with quarterback Jon Kitna. The Lions have other pressing needs on both sides of the ball, and it would probably make the most sense for them to go with Joe Thomas, the standout offensive tackle from Wisconsin.

The Cleveland Browns won a coin toss with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and will pick third while the Bucs pick fourth. The Browns could select Quinn, an Ohio native who would love to play for them, but they might not be ready to give up on their young starter, Charlie Frye. They also figure to prefer Oklahoma running back Adrian Peterson. The Bucs also have a young quarterback in Chris Simms. They'll probably make Georgia Tech wide receiver Calvin Johnson the fourth pick.

The next two teams that could be in the market for a quarterback are Minnesota, at No. 7, and Miami, at No. 9. If Quinn were to somehow get past the Dolphins, he could conceivably fall all the way down to Kansas City, at No. 23.

That would be a severe blow to a prospect who not so long ago seemed on the fast track to elite NFL status. Quinn seemed to have so much more going for him than any other collegiate quarterback, beginning with his coach, Charlie Weis. As the offensive coordinator for the Patriots, Weis helped develop Tom Brady from a sixth-round draft choice to a two-time Super Bowl Most Valuable Player. As the head coach of Notre Dame, he helped make Quinn a prolific passer while operating the same scheme -- which emphasized spread formations and quick, short passing -- that Weis employed so successfully in the NFL.

"There's not one other player that's had the kind of coaching that I've had the past couple of years," Quinn said. "There's not one other player that's done what I've done the past couple of years. You've seen the progress, the numbers and everything we've done at Notre Dame. And I feel that I am the best leader for a team that needs someone to step in and fulfill that job."

Still, Quinn isn't getting much feel for his professional future at the Combine. None of the conversations he has had with coaches, general managers, or scouts here have led him to believe that he is at the top of any team's wish list.

"I have no idea at this point," he said. "The draft is a funny thing. I was just talking to one of the (Broncos') scouts and he was saying they didn't really talk to (former Vanderbilt quarterback) Jay Cutler before and they ended up drafting him. That's who they wanted, but they didn't even interview him. So you really have to be open to every team and take every chance you have to talk to every team and make sure you just make a good first impression."

Quinn is polished and well spoken, so the talking part shouldn't be any problem. He also will have an easy time displaying the considerable knowledge he gained from Weis about what it takes to succeed as an NFL quarterback and how to execute an NFL offense.

Where Quinn might have hurt himself, however, is with his refusal to participate in Combine drills. Quinn won't throw or run for NFL team representatives until his March 4 Pro Day at Notre Dame. That has led to speculation that he is concerned about his ability to put on an impressive-enough show to boost his stature, and, in some circles, it has led to questions about his competitive desire. Russell isn't doing any drills here, either, but he seemingly has much more to lose with a poor showing.

Quinn needs to seize any opportunity he has help his cause, and the Combine is a significant one.

It could be argued that Russell has benefited far too greatly and that Quinn has suffered far too much from a single game -- the Sugar Bowl. Yet, for different reasons, it left a lasting impression because it was a last impression.

"We didn't do enough to get a win," he said. "And any time that's how you end your career, that's how you end your last game going into the NFL, of course people are going to harp on that. That's what everyone can think about and write about. That's their last memory."

It's up to Quinn to start creating some new memories.
