Snack on almonds???

I was buzzing through MSN.com and saw a little blurb that read as follows:

Seventy per day, to be exact. That's the number that people in a City of Hope National Medical Center experiment ate daily for six months, in conjunction with a reduced-calorie diet, to drop 18 percent of their body weight. Study author Michelle Wien partially credits the satiety factor. "Almonds are a nutrient-dense food that provides healthful monounsaturated fat, protein, and fiber, which together contribute to feeling full," she says. Go for whole almonds in their unsalted, raw, or dry-roasted state. Fifteen to 20 will do the trick for a quick snack. Try 50 as a meal replacement.

Sounds a bit strange to me, anyone care to comment on this.

It makes sense.

Note: I haven't read the study.

Having said that, I bet the test subjects were your typical fat-ass people who don't eat healthy or regularly. Since they didn't eat regularly, they probably did the starve-binge routine that so many do.

So, eating a 150 calories of almonds would be better for them (both calorically and nutritionally) than a Hostess Fruit Pie (450 kcal, including trans fat) or a 44 oz. Coke (470 kcals, including high fructose corn syrup) and a bag of chips (200 kcals).

In the second example, they'd have avoided about 500 calories. Not to mention lowering the chances of getting heart disease and diabetes.

Additionally, eating regularly promotes a higher metabolism; which would mean more fat burned just by being awake.

Of course they lost weight.

My diet is the one aspect of weight training that I've not really been able to make a dent in.

Jodi, can you link a diet template that I can use?

Thanks!

Posted by: calalily1972

I don't really have a template but why don't you start off basic.

Figure out how many calories you need for the day. Make 40% of that protein, 30% Carbs and 30% Fat. You don't even have to use a ratio but it may help you get organized. I use to use fitday to log my meals but now I just know off the top of my head. Sad when I can tell you the fat, carb and protein content of almost any item

I'd really appreciate that. I wasn't going to say anything, but I've already done what you suggested. It helped, but I have problems writing a complete diet.

If I had a template, even one that I used day in and day out, that would be great. If I have a strict regimen of a diet, I wouldn't need the food to be interesting or tasty.

When it comes to achieving a goal, I'm a persistent plodder. All I need is the goal.

My caloric goal is 2800 and my percentages are are (p/f/c) 40%/30%/30%. At 40% protein, that would give me 1.3 grams of protein per pound of bodyweight.

Thanks again, Jodi!

Not to steal this thread what are you current eating habits like?

As Iain said, list your eating habits. Let's see what we can do.

Meal 1: two eggs, a piece of dry whole wheat bread, and a cup of plain Romanian lettuce.

Meal 2: Sandwich (2 sl. whole wheat, 2 tsp. mayo, 3 oz. deli turkey, lettuce), apple

Meal 3: I usually flub this meal. It just pick crap at random from the fridge. Stuff like bananas, carrots, a small portion of leftovers, yogurt, etc.)

Meal 4: A reasonable portion of whatever was prepared for dinner. Usually chicken based.

Meal 5: 1/2 cup Oatmeal, 1 tbsp. of NP, carrots

I drink over 64 oz. of diet soda each day. I also drink water before, during, and after all of my workouts. I also drink at least 8 oz of water before bed.

Yeah, it's pretty crappy, but that's why I'm asking for help.

I should add that I also have access to plenty of beef (in the form of ground and steaks) and fish (trout and halibut).

I love almonds from Fresh Market which is this high end nutritional food store. I buy 2lb bags for about $12.00.

Almonds own, when I am at school I often eat them before bed time. Gotta love nuts.

Almonds like many other foods can help you lose weight. Not because of some magic ingredient that sheds fat, but because they are healthy. (Good fats, protein, fiber)

You know how many dumbasses will read something like this and start eating a lb of almonds a day, and wonder why it isnt working?

Who are you kidding. They'll eat toffee covered almonds.

Screw that Dark chocolate covered almonds.

Dammit and all I have are these blanched almonds.

Posted by: DOMS

From Jodi (I think, maybe Emma).

Anytime Almonds
INGREDIENTS:
2 cups dry roasted almonds, no salt added
2 tablespoons olive oil
2 cloves garlic, finely chopped
1 sprig fresh rosemary, chopped
1 1/2 teaspoons kosher salt (do not use regular table salt)

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

DIRECTIONS:
Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C).
In a bowl, mix together almonds, olive oil, garlic, and rosemary until nuts are completely coated. Season with salt. Spread evenly on a baking sheet.
Bake in a preheated oven for 10 minutes.

I like my blanched almonds though.
