Dairy consumption

I never understood why people say shy away from dairy on a cut, it doesnt seem to make a difference for me...

Why do people say this? Is it a myth?

Also how do you figure out the "amount" of dairy in something? Do you go by the milk sugars?

For example 1 cup of cottage cheese = 6g sugar
While 1 cup of skim milk = 12g sugar

Does the 1 cup of skim milk have 2x the dairy?

I eat a lot of dairy and haven't had any issues with it, in fact I've been told in the past that dairy helps flush out your system, this could be BS though!!!

Many people are allergic to dairy and lots more have intolerances to specific dairy foodstuffs, which just basically means that you do not produce enough of a certain enzyme to break down the food, eg, lactose digestion requires the enzyme lactase. Without enough of the enzyme, your body can't digest the food properly and that can lead to diarrhoea and gas, not exactly ideal if you're cutting!

More serious allergies can lead to CNS involvement, where your body treats the food as a threat, this is bad news!

Its quite common to be sensitive to dairy foods, apparently up to 30% of the population are lactose intolerant. I guess that's why you commonly hear of people avoiding dairy in general, and more importantly while cutting, even if you're not certain that you're lactose intolerant, just to make sure your body gets the best out of your food.

IMO, it's the sugar content in most diary is not welcomed during a cut.

Cottage cheese and non-fat yogurts are a good source of protein IMO and keeps the cals and carbs relatively low

Non Fat yogurts are loaded with sugars. CC also has a decent amount. Again this all depends on how strict you are being with your cut. If you are trying to cut down for a contest, then the final few weeks, dairy is more then likely not going to be a part of your cut. But if you are looking to get to 10-12% then in moderation it is fine.

Sure, most of those are fine. However, he was asking about why people avoid them on a cut and it's because of the sugars.

Some particular brands sure they do contain too much sugar, however the non-fat greek yogurt I use myself isn't too bad at all, just gotta keep your eye on the nutrition info I guess.

I heard that lactose gives an overall puffy appearance and that's why most people limit their intake during a cut. I was eating a lot of fat free milk, yogurt, cottage cheese last month, but after I read that I quit eating so much. I still love yogurt with fruit, but I scaled it back a bit.

wasn't there something with the sugar content in the yogurt not having an effect because the live and active cultures in the yogurt "gobble up" (lol, that is a real sceintific term) the sugar?

Yeah, in yogurt (we still don't know how much gets "gobbled up" ) but not the other diary products.

it is definitely a myth and a generalisation .

there are some good dairy products that are extremely beneficial, such as yogurt, milk.

regarding to the sugar, I guess it is a case of everybody being different, i drink more than 1 litre of milk a day and have no problem lose weight when i wanted to.

it also depends how cut you want to go. I am happy with 8%, but if you are going for 4%, synthetic whey is prob the only way to go. because there is no natural food that is high in protein, low in carb and fat. even natural whey comes with heaps of fat and carbs, too.

if you havent got a problem with dairy while cutting , chances are its not going to be a problem for you in the future , so just enjoy your luck of being one of those who dont have to shy away from dairy.

I drink a few gallons of 2% a week and I'm chubby, so I believe the hype.

Dairy doesn't sit well with me anyway so I don't mind staying away from it while on a cut.

Does anyone have any info on this?

if ur not lactose intolerant no need to cut out milk sugars. Whether u eat galactose sugar or a starchy carb the end result is glucose in ur blood, so dont wet ur panties.
