How low on the glycemic index should I eat

I know I should eat foods that are low in processed carbs, but at what point is a food considered high on the glycemic index?

don't worry about that as much as worrying about eating balanced meals. Once you combine foods, the glycemic index is lowered.

The glycemic index was tested using a fixed amount of the specific carb (50g) and in a fasted conditions. Not a whole lot of real world application if you ask me.

That isn't the point he was trying to make. GI is just a flawed way to evaluate food choices. Use something like the Glycemic load.

Whats that?

Glycemic Load takes into account the mixing of various foods and macronutrients on carbohydrate digestion and absorption. 25g of glucose by itself will hit your bloodstream in x amount of minutes but 25g of glucose with 25g of protein and 15g of fat will be a different story. Search for glycemic load on here i'm sure its been discussed plenty of times.

either way....calories in calories out.

just because it is low on the glycemic index does not mean anything if you are over eating it. Hell, I can gain weight on the Atkins diet if I pound down steak and eggs all day.

Amen to that. I started cycling my carbs in an attempt to get some slow recomping going and not have to count cals etc. I was cheating one whole day and only had 3 low carb days with one being a no carb day on monday. I wound up losing weight like crazy so i started eating carbs in every meal and getting a bit more lax with my diet and STILL lost weight. By lax i meant i would eat wings with caesar salad+croutons while going out to dinner with friends 2-3 times a week.

yea, as long as you are in a caloric defecit, it will work. The cycling thing works well for partitioning. Check out Lyle's UD2.0 if you haven't already. It has some great info in it.

The only thing I concern myself with is the types of foods that I eat. IE, I just don't want to be eating garbage. Could I get lean if I ate 3 snickers bars a day? yes. Would it be beneficial for maintaining lean tissue....probably not.

I'm the same way right now. I don't eat the same thing everyday like i used to do. I've been doing this so long i know what portions to use and just keep my meals fairly balanced. If i want to gain weight i'll have a bigger piece of steak, and more oats than i've been eating. I quit counting every last piece of food that enters my mouth, it drives me crazy and doesn't necessarily offer greater results for me.

yea, I don't count calories (sometimes I throw them into fit day just to see). I just eat though. I can eyeball everything. I measure things like brown rice or oats. For meat I just eyeball 6oz. If it is a training day and I am still hungry...I eat more.
