Before and after workout meals

i know that I should be drinking my protein shakes after my workouts, but what else would you guys recomend eating, before as well as after your workouts? and how important are starchy carbs directly after your workout for building mass?

usually in the afternoons, around 4:00

I would have 1/2-1 cup of brown rice, oats or sweet potato w/ the protein shake after a w/o.
