This may sound silly, I dunno, probably more of a newbie question but Im just dug out an old hobtop steamer which I bought my mum months ago and never got used, how long should I steam veg for? is 5mins ok for broccoli/cauliflower so they are not hard as rock but not like eating mush.

Depends on what you are steaming. For sweet potatoes- until you can slide a fork into them- for something like broccoli just until they lose their crunch but are still bright green about 3-5 min.

So if I wanna eat them @ the same time but the sweet potatoes near the pan and then broccoli away from it if you get what i mean.

^ What I do is steam my sweet potatoes until cooked or almost cooked then turn off the element and throw in the broccoli and then coover the pot again for 3-5 min. then I eat.

Depends on how much brocolli you are cooking. I am usually at 10 mins with a steamer, Can't be mushy makes me want to puke.

if u accidentally over-steam your brocolli and it loses some of it's gren colour and crunch does it mean you've lost a lot of the nutrients?

Yes but you can drink the water you steamed them in
